This kit seems very accurate. Upon setting up a new aquarium, it showed the Ammonia and Nitrite levels as being too high. Ammonia was about 0.5 PPM and Nitrite between 2-5 PPM. After 1-2 weeks, when I tested again, it was about the same. After another 2 weeks, the Nitrite level dropped to 0.5 PPM. This represents the normal cycle of an aquarium. Ammonia gets converted into Nitrite, which gets converted into Nitrate.

Recent test results (see photos) have shown the Ammonia and Nitrite levels to be very low or absent, which is wonderful, but Nitrate levels to be quite high. The Nitrate level should, as the booklet states, be below 40 PPM, but my results showed it as nearing 160 PPM. This shows that the Ammonia and Nitrite has broken down normally, but the Nitrate is not being removed efficiently. The booklet is helpful as it tells you what you can do or add to the water to reduce levels of each chemical. For Nitrate, the issue is excess fish waste and fish food.

So, I did a 50% water change, using a gravel cleaner to suck up the water while agitating the gravel. I also removed half of the gravel from my tank, and cleaned the sponge filters from my Fluval U3, and the inside of its plastic shell.

I have not tested the water since, but I am confident that Nitrate levels are now lower because the whole aquarium is cleaner. I would expect Ammonia and Nitrite to be a bit higher due to the new water. I use a few drops of Fluval Quick Start to kick-start the biological cycle (the process of Ammonia breaking down into Nitrate).

There a few issues I've had with the test kit, but most are now sorted out:

    1. The test tubes leak when shaken vigorously, which is a problem because the manual tells you to shake it vigorously for two of the tests (Ammonia and Nitrate). This is OK with Ammonia, since you shake it for just 5 seconds. But for Nitrate you're meant to shake it "vigorously" for 1 minute! Doing so caused about 10 droplets on the floor, and one on my arm.

This is dangerous. Both the solutions for these two tests are stated to cause "severe burns" on skin. The leakage is caused by the caps, which sit over the top of the tube. They need rubber cork-like bungs that squeeze inside of it. Definitely wear goggles, or shake it inside a towel.

    2. The booklet is a bit of a pain to repeatedly navigate, and the text is small. It's calling out for a quick-read table that lists the process for each chemical test, some of which have more complex procedures (mainly Nitrate).

    3. The colours of the solution can be a bit difficult to differentiate. I don't find this a problem, but some may. The solution should be compared against the white background of the colour chart at the back of the booklet.

Rating: 5/5 for accuracy & 4/5 for test tube design and booklet

5.0 out of 5 stars Great testing kit

Im new to fish keeping and everyone everywhere recommended this so i got it. At first felt fidly and i had to read the manual like 100 times to make sure indo it right but now that i have done it few times its easier. Seems very accurate. The only negative point i have is that it tests for 5 things but only has 4 tubes. I guess i will have to keep one for next time i buy a new one when i run out of this one. Great piece of testing kit though in a very good storsge box.
