Adaptive Space: How GM and Other Companies are Positively Disrupting Themselves and Transforming into Agile Organizations Kindle Edition
To edge out the competition in today’s disruptive environment, you need to ensure that your company is agile—that it can respond to change instantly and effectively. Because fast and furious change is the only thing you can count on in business today.
Network expert Michael Arena helped enable GM’s legendary turnaround. In these pages, he explains how you can transform your own company through the concept of adaptive space.
Based on hundreds of interviews and the author’s own groundbreaking study of dozens of organizations spanning a variety of industries, Adaptive Space shows how to position your company for today—and for the future—by enabling creativity, innovation, and novel ideas to flow freely among teams, across departments, and throughout the company.
Using GM as the main case study—along with the stories of other highly adaptive organizations, like Apple, Amazon, Disney, and Gore—Arena provides a model you can follow to reinvent your company. It’s about inspiring employees to explore new ideas, empowering the most creative people and teams to spread their ideas across the organization, and operationalizing the entrepreneurial spirit so adaptability is set in stone.
Hesitation is a killer in today’s business landscape. With Adaptive Space, you have everything you need to confront disruption with smart, confident actions and seize the valuable opportunities that come with change.

We're practitioners of change working for large organisations that want innovations & results but have a low threshold for the often dry science behind it. So, as a senior global executive, what Michael Arena has done here is strike the perfect balance of science, accessibility, & PRACTICAL APPLICATION/EXAMPLES (can't stress that enough) to keep you engaged all the way through.
This guy was instrumental in the spectacular & unexpected turnaround of General Motors (GM) from the jaws of death to a new heyday with the innovations shared in the book around the application of Organisational Network Analysis
You'll learn how to identify the different types of players at work: 'Brokers,' 'Energizers,' 'Connectors' and 'Challengers' plus harness informal networks at work, transform leadership, & create a new level of innovation. All with clear illustrations of how to do that.
This book is a manual of how to create movements at work. I'd put it up there with 'Tribes' by Seth Godin & 'Give & Take' by Adam Grant. If you’re into the scientists behind the theory (Rob Cross, Kim Cameron, Wayne Baker) you'll love the applications share in the book with the robustness behind it.
Highly recommended - can't wait for the sequel!
Adaptive Space is a must read for an HR professional staying on the leading edge of the field as it points to several frontiers for how we can add value in the future. It’s also a great resource for consultants, leaders, and anyone grappling with how to enable innovation and performance in organizations today.
I found it not only relevant to the work I do now in CRE and consulting, but found it very applicable to my time as an Army officer where I had to develop organizations capable of rapidly plugging into VUCA environments overseas where quickly understanding the networked relationships and engaging them meant the difference between mission success and failure. This book promotes understanding of the many roles people play outside of an org chart and functional descriptions, allowing you to go from two-dimensional line and blocks to an adaptable, living organism with networked resiliency. It provides both a rational for change and the methods of implementation to nurture curiosity, creativity and communication in ways that stimulate shared solutions that have application beyond their initial problem set.
Think of it like this, Michael Arena is showing us how to create intellectual space in organizations that can be used to create culture, think about technology and work space, and identify business opportunities and risk. It’s the foundation for a whole cloth, unifying, inclusive approach to strategy and operations. I recommend buying the Kindle version as it lends itself to sharing and discussing ideas using your own parallel examples.
The book is well-written and organized, provides a clear thesis, is thoroughly researched, and provides an inspirational view of how to achieve organizational effectiveness in today's volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.
