"Why do we do this?
Why do we undervalue things when we have them?
Why is it only on the verge of losing something that we see how much we need it?"
I love the characters. Yes, Taylor Jenkins Reid does that with every book she has written. I guess this will stay for the books to come as well!
Her flawed, clueless characters. It's the character development that's always so wholesome and damn satisfying to read.
The main couple/main characters we are dealing with, Lauren and Ryan, while they are separating for a year as they cannot come to stand each other after years of marriage. Somehow they believe that they would make their marriage work that way.
But it's the other characters that made the plot so good to read. Lauren's sister, Rachel, and her colleague, Mila, are my most favourite characters in this one.
Rachel for being herself, totally reliable and going to work hard towards her dreams ultimately. Mila, the funny friend who you can just hand over your life with all the good, the bad and the ugly.
And then there's Lauren's mom. I love this woman so much!
And her grandmother. I tried my best not to cry towards the end of the story because I believed in what the rest of the characters were telling each other and it's so damn hopeful beautiful!
Yes, Charlie, Lauren's brother. The character which is developed the best I would say. I wish there was more of his fiancee, Natalie's, part. I want to know more about this character.
And there's David as well. A refreshing character. Love this character. Wish I meet a human like him.
And well.... Thumper Cooper. I hand over to you my burning heart. I so want to hold you close. I would choose you over any of these characters anyday!
The family and friendship dynamics are quite strong and stable throughout the story. The writing is good but I find it not as gripping and heart-wrenching as her other books.
I find some parts to be so convenient for the characters. Of course, things have been planned for such situations to happen but, well, it seemed too easy and cheesy towards the end.
But I find the book real good and there are so many things we adults form a strong population of confused beings no matter what we are dealing with. No, kids. We aren't handling anything as we should. We are all confused and become more fragile as we age. So yes, we need more of such confused adults to ream up with and make mistakes together and go through them together. This is what the book is about.
I love your books, Taylor. I need the new book soon 💌

A cosy, easy read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 January 2020Verified Purchase
Taylor Jenkins Reid has a moreish, gorgeously lyrical way of writing about relationships and the human condition and this short read – about a woman in an unhappy marriage who, over the course of a year apart from her husband, learns to take responsibility for her own happiness and how to love and be loved – is no different. It’s no great work of literature but is a cosy, easy read to lose yourself in on a wintry night.

Real life in a novel.

This was my second read by Taylor Jenkins Reid, after Evelyn Hugo, and let me tell you - it will not be my last. Her writing style captivates you and leaves you wanting so much more.
Lauren and Ryan met in college and immediately knew it would be forever. But how long does forever last when you can't stand the person you thought you'd love for the rest of your life? What do you do when you can't bare to divorce, but also can't stand to be in the same room? They decide to cut of all contact for one full year, live separately and see if they can bring back the spark they once had to continue their marriage. Will it be enough?
This story felt like real life. It felt raw and honest, when life hands you a different set of cards than you had expected, and how you handle it. I loved both of their characters, even if at times I couldn't stand decisions that Lauren made, only because it felt like poor decisions I would make. I loved the family dynamics between Lauren's family and their emotions towards Ryan. I loved the effort this couple put in, learning their faults and flaws and working together to be a better person, for each other and themselves. The way this story played out was wonderful. It felt like true progression and what would actually transpire in real life.

In short: This book is definitely worth a read, especially if you're in a long term relationship. I'm not and I still liked it.
The strongest point this book has, is that it understands (and points out) that everyone does relationships their own way and that you can never really judge another relationship from the outside.
I found it a little slow in the beginning, but I liked it in the end. Due to the book's subject the protagonist is very self-involved, but in this case the self-reflection is actually necessary. Constant talk about someone's romantic relationship usually bores me, so I won't be rereading this book, but I don't regret having invested the time to read it. It's important because it has an important message. The ending ties up just a little bit too easily for my tastes, but the author kept me guessing what would happen throughout the whole book and it was a fast read. Can recommend!

Not my favourite by the author

The book had very touching and heart-felt moments. But a lot of it felt pretty repetitive and a little unrealistic.
I still enjoyed it and would recommend it to friends, but I definitely prefer the authors other titles more.
