Product description

Review

Astonishing and excruciating. It gnaws at us still ― New York Times Book Review

A modern classic ― The Times

One of the greatest books of the [last] century ― Guardian

Rings down the decades as the most moving testament to the persecution of innocence ― Daily Mail

Of all the multitudes who throughout history have spoken for human dignity in times of great suffering and loss, no voice is more compelling than that of Anne Frank -- John F. Kennedy

A masterpiece ― Il Mattino (Italy)

A remarkable reading and visual experience ― Frankfurter Neue Presse (Germany)

Mesmerizing... Polonsky creates unforgettable panels that enable us to see Anne Frank's writing in a fresh light ― Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Germany)

Folman and Polonsky . . . focus on illuminating its humor, insight, and supporting cast in this spirited graphic adaption . . . Anne, drawn with large dark eyes, blooms like the hardiest, loveliest weed-a moody teenager whose wit, self-awareness, and rich fantasy life take center stage . . . The beauty of Anne's life and the untarnished power of her legacy-here further elevated by Folman and Polonsky-are heartening reminders of the horror of her fate.

Publishers Weekly

Evocatively crafted, this comic brings Frank's world to life for all ages but takes care to respect and prioritize the primacy of her story in her own words.

Our 10-year daughter is quite historically-aware and somehow has a keen interest in the second world war. In addition, she loves to learn about women that stand out. And she is very much into graphic novels. So this was the perfect Christmas gift. The book is filled with beautiful art and is a spectacular adaptation of the Anne Frank story, that adds another dimension to the narrative. The style and colouring match the late 1903’s and war years. Our daughter already read an Anne Frank biography before so she knew the story and details (and was horrified by it). This graphic novel however it doesn’t not address nor depict the Bergen-Belsen camp part of her way too short life. It is an abbreviated version of the dairy but its captures the essence very well with the artist perfectly rendering some of the Anne’s thoughts and perceptions that she trusted to Kitty, her diary. It is a gripping story about growing up in unusual and grim circumstances, while the humanity shines through though Anne’s wit and grumpiness. The

The book and its stunning art gives gloom impression of Anne’s circumstances, it is a touching visualisation of event and her thoughts, the boredom and despair. You will get cross section part of the secret annexxe “achterhuis” and god explanation fo several events during the war as well. In contrast to many comics there is a fair amount of text, but it is highly readable and a page turner. This is simply very powerful story telling. Very well done.

I love this book. It is a beautiful adaptation of Anne's real diary, and while it shortened the diary a little I thought it picked out key parts to include well. The artwork was amazing; I especially liked the depictions of the residents of the annexe sitting down to eat dinner adapted as animals, of Anne's mother, Peter's mother and Peter's father as fire-breathing dragons, the picture of Anne incorporated in "The Scream" by Edvard Munch and the picture of Margot incorporated in Gustav Klimt's portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. The artist is clearly very skilled. My favourite picture is the one of grown-up Anne reading to younger Anne. I would recommend this book to anyone aged 10+ who loves Anne Frank.
