In a small town in Sweden it appears to be an ordinary day. But look more closely, and you'll see a mysterious masked figure approaching a bank. Two hours later, chaos has descended. A bungled attempted robbery has developed into a hostage situation - and the offender is refusing to communicate their demands to the police.
Within the building, fear quickly turns to irritation for the seven strangers trapped inside. If this is to be their last day on earth, shouldn't it be a bit more dramatic? But as the minutes tick by, they begin to suspect that the criminal mastermind holding them hostage might be more in need of rescuing than they are.
In his inimitable style, Backman leads you into a comedy of errors with layered characters and puzzling events. He moves effortlessly between them, building suspense by exploring their secrets before blindsiding you with a twist so unexpected you realise you’ve plunged into a thriller.
His writing has you emotionally invested making it impossible to let go. He explores the fears and anxieties troubling humanity with a feather-light tenderness leaving you wanting nothing more than to hug the book close at the end and remain so for eternity.
Anxious People is completely different from all his other books and yet, has everything that makes him a much loved author.
Hilarious, powerful, and uplifting, this will heal you and reinstate your faith in all that’s good in this world.
We see eight extremely anxious and different from eachother hostages in an apartment right above the bank, where the bank robber has kept them hostages. Along the journey these people realise they have more in common than they might think.
The book deals with human connections and Fredrik Backman is always best at writing such heart warming yet thought provoking novels. The characters written in every book of his are quite unique and commendable.
But this book is quite different from previous novels of his. Yet similar in few of quirky characters and common life issues explained and lived very thoroughly. This one's not only about robbery, it had multiple layers to it and only can be experienced by reading this book.
I received the ALC from Libro FM and I am grateful for it. The audiobook is also just perfect, narrated by Marin Ireland. The dialogue and the pitch, tone is just perfect. But I would suggest to go with the physical copy or ebook for this one rather than the audiobook.
