Sent to assassinate a target in Ireland, Max McLean has no earthly idea of the hell that will be unleashed upon him. A hundred Dollar bill is the holy grail that everyone seeks and if Max is in their way; well, they’ll just go through him.
Make no mistake, this is crime fiction writing at its very best. You want gun fights? More than you can throw a Sig at. You want car chases? Why stop there? The beauty of this book is not just the fights and chases themselves, it’s the breadth of locations and the varied methods of pursuit. This is writing that goes over and above what will excite you.
So, whilst the chase scenes will have your heart rate racing; we learn what is behind the pursuit of the banknote and why it has left so many bodies in its wake. The storytelling is every bit as good as the action elements.
Throughout the book, each character introduced is fully fleshed out. Max has built up a coterie of dubious contacts over the years and we get to know them whilst Max runs, drives, swims and gambles for his life.
There are plenty of books out there with fight scenes and gunplay. Pick one. Or do yourself a favour and read this.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Arkhangel is a terrific read - at times exhausting in its intensity and breathless in its action. It felt like I'd read 20% of the book before the pace allowed me to breath and try to take stock of what was happening. At that point the plotting really took over, throwing me this way and that, keeping me reading well after I should have turned the lights out.
It's an interesting contrast with his excellent first novel, The Break Line - there's still a baroque otherworldliness in the direction he takes it (especially towards the end), but it felt like a much more traditional thriller. The characters and settings (Ireland, Kent, the Parisian catacombs, Tel Aviv, Russia) are all vivid and well-realised. And at the end I was both satisfied and left with questions. I think that's as it should be.
Definitely recommended.

Badly written, completely implausible and plain stupid.

The online 5 star recommendation as a good read was right.

The book was a present for my husband who is reading it and from time to time remarks how good it is (in a surprised way as he hasn’t read the author before). He hasn’t finished it yet but can tell he is enjoying/savouring it. FYI he usually reads John Grisham.
