The first Epic volume to feature the first Avengers spin-off is a real treat for fans of the more offbeat version of the team, and great for new fans that have never had a chance to check out any of the West Coast adventures before now. After a few introductory excerpts from the regular Avengers title, we follow Hawkeye as he and new bride Mockinbird set up a whole new branch of the Avengers in California, first in a four-issue miniseries and then in a full ongoing.
Before long they have recruited Iron Man, Tigra and Wonder Man to the team and they're straight into superhero struggles of their own. Along the way they take on the Blank, Graviton, Master Pandemonium, Goliath, Kraven the Hunter and (in a crossover with the Vision and Scarlet Witch limited series, two issues of which are included here) the Grim Reaper and his villain team. They even throw in the first Wonder Man solo one-shot at the end of the volume, too.
Most of the focus is on the new and untested team as they learn to work together and all struggle with their own personal problems. Characters like Hank Pym, the Thing and Firebird pass through, too, with all of them potential recruits to the WCA. Writers Roger Stern and Steve Englehart have a great handle on hero and villain alike, and pencillers Bob Hall and Al Milgrom make sure it all looks pretty good, too!
Extras include six pages from Marvel Age featuring the series, six pages from the Official Marvel Handbook focused on Hawkeye and Mockingbird, a 2-page poster by Hall and Milgrom, an Amazing Heroes cover, Bill Sienkiewicz's textless cover to Wonder Man, cover art from the A: WC Premiere Hardcover, the A:WC Omnibus, the Vision and Scarlet Witch trade and the Family Ties Premiere Hardcover, and a new afterword by editor Ralph Macchio. A bumper collection to start, and hopefully the first step to collecting the entire West Coast run.
