4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book!

In order to write this review from a future perspective (Wooooo, time travel. No, in all honesty, I just forgot to review it at the time) I went back through the group chat on Bookstagram for this buddy read, and took note of the messages sent to use as references.

I really enjoyed this book! It rekindled my love for stories featuring vampires. I loved that was set in 19th century New Orleans. Those of you who regularly read my reviews will see a pattern here of high-rating historical fiction.

I loved the French phrases as they reminded me of French lessons at school (I had forgotten that I knew the odd French word. BRB whilst I go and add 'Speaks French,' to my CV lol). I didn't understand a word of the Spanish, but luckily it didn't matter as everything was naturally translated.

Odette was my favourite character by far. I do love a strong, dominant, female character, who is 'ahead of their time'.

I was out-on-a-limb in the group chat, as I was one of only a handful of us that actually enjoyed the book. However, even those of us who agreed to disagree on whether we liked it or not, all disliked the same things:
The chapters from the POV of the "bad guy," were cringe invoking! I feel they were not even required as, in hindsight, I'm not 100% sure who the character was at the end.
We also felt that we wanted more detail and world-building of New Orleans and the atmosphere. Mardi Gras occurred during the story, yet we only spent, like, half a page at the festival. I feel this was a missed opportunity.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.

This was an enjoyable read. Celine was an interesting character and I liked her fire and determination. I was a little worried at times that she might turn into a swooning heroine but thankfully Celine proved herself more than capable of handling herself.
I loved the description of the Court although not much was made explicit so there is certainly more to learn in this regard.
My only real issue was, as others have mentioned, why the story was set in New Orleans. It felt strange because to me, I never really got a sense of the location. It felt very generic. And despite the fact that the author told us it was New Orleans, I found myself picturing something that looked more like 19th century London.
In regards to the plot, it was actually a great mystery. I really found myself wondering who the murderer was and who the overarching villain was going to be. I’m happy to say that I did not guess either correctly and the story really kept me on my toes. I love a thriller and this had real suspense throughout.
A solid start to the series and I will almost certainly read the next to see how the story unfolds.
