I have read a lot of historical romances and this one is so very different from them all. This one focuses not on the glamourous balls at Almacks but on the darker side of Regency London.

Lords and Ladies move about in their carriages and curricles on the streets of London and yet beneath them, in the maze of sewer tunnels, lives the underbelly of the population. It is in this violent and not to mention horrifically unsanitory place that the Earl of Maxwell has grown up.

Stolen at his parent's deadthbed and robbed of his memories, the gutter is all Malcom has ever known and all he wishes for. Or so he thinks until the tenacious Ms. Lovelace crashes into the sewers and right into his life.

The two crash headfirst into each other. Sparks fly, tempers rise and an undeniable spark roars between them. This story is full of heartbreak, dangerous persuits and sizzling romance and offers a fresh perspective on the challenges in the Regency era.

Verity Lovelace needs the story of her life in orser to save her family - she goes to the sewers of London for answers and she finds them jn the most unusual way.

Malcolm North has only known the sewers and no other home - so when Verity discloses his location, He is confounded and angry with her.

What is a man to do when the lady refuses to keep out of his business - why pretend to marry her - I loved the Cinderella them a bit here.

Malcom and Verity are this perfect couple for each other.

Soulful, intense, should not be missed!!

The story grips you, tugs directly at your heart strings and pulls you deep into itself from the very beginning. I don't think there will be any person who would not want to hug the little boy that Malcolm was and wipe his tears. It is so soulful, every word would make you feel so helpless...you would feel so scared about your own child. And then the story weaves so beautifully with Malcolm and Verity and all their insecurities, their defense that they put up...their struggles and their intense, sizzling chemistry!
And then we meet our beloved characters from earlier stories and they blend in so seamlessly with this story.
This is one of the best by Christi...a very unconventional hero, a strong heroine (which is her trademark), adorable side characters and a unique, gripping storyline makes it a must read for all romance lovers.

Seems I am out of step here with most of the other reviewers. I love this writers work, the Wicked Wallflowers and Sinful Brides series were, for me, up there with the very best, so because of that, and the fact I read the dedication at the start of the book, I have awarded 4 stars rather than 3.
I had little empathy with Verity, though I really did like and admire Malcom - but then, that’s just me and not the writer. My main problem was that I found the story didn’t really flow: it seemed rushed and not properly planned. There were too many unanswered questions about Malcoms early days following the kidnap, why Livvie allowed herself to be treated like a pampered princess when it was clear there was so much more fire in her. The ending seemed rather hurried, with Bertha being a convenient plug to fill a hole. Notwithstanding this, the story was very unusual and on the whole I did enjoy it. I do hope however that the rest of the series is smoother. I really hope as well that we get a book with Giles story, as I found myself quite fascinated with him.
