Shivani ji had a good understanding of the dogma and practices of her contemporary society. She takes a very balanced and unbiased view of contemporary society. She points out the flaws in the society but stays shy on making strong statements on the flaws. She is all about female empowerment, and yet has a very balanced and nuanced understanding of female needs.
Shivani has created her characters with lots of love. Characters of Bhairavi (aka Chandan), Maya, Rajarajeshwari, Aghori, Charan are well crafted. Characters are flawed and yet they rise to the occasion delighting the readers.
Bhairavi is a powerful story of the interaction between Shivani's characters set in picturesque, mesmerising setting. This particular story starts in samsaan (pyre grounds). An Aghori has found a women who has fallen from a train into a samsaan ground. The readers may be tempted think that it is about supernatural. The story moves from the hills to Delhi to samsaan, and in the process gives the readers a good glimpse of contemporary India.
I think the character of Bhairavi (Chandan) has been wasted in the end. A beautiful nubile young girl, married and in love with her husband, and then forced to relinquish everything by fate to adopt the life of a Sanyasi.
I still wonder why no-one bothered to turn this into a film or serial.
