This was a "quirky" book about an American "Miss Marple", Myrtle (nearly 90). She likes to solve crimes with the sometimes reluctant help of her neighbour, Miles (70), much to the annoyance of her son, Red, who is the Chief of Police. So when she has not one, but later a second body in her backyard, she is in her element.
I liked the non-romantic relationship between Myrtle and Miles (who has some good one-liners). There was no sex, no gruesome details of body parts and torture, which are in so many books these days, and no bad language. For this reason, this book might not appeal to everyone, but it was an easy, gentle read with some interesting characters.

One niggle! I became increasingly irritated by the constant references to Myrtle's bad cooking. Once was funny, twice slightly amusing and after that boring and irritating.
Also, I was puzzled by Myrtle having a 2 year old grandson. Red must have married a much younger woman! This was never explained. I have another Myrtle Clover on my Kindle and will review it when I have read it (but I have a backlog of books at the moment!).

A good silly read that shouldn't be taken too seriously. A senior sleuth, a body in her backyard and a collection of past secrets. Can she find the link between the body and the motive? Who would want to kill the wastrel? As she wades through the suspects with her senior sidekick, will the killer strike back. Great characters with the right devil may care of the elderly mixed with some dry humour mixed into a plot that will keep you entertained.

Think an octogenarian Miss Marple, but less polished, less witty, less sophisticated, more repetitive, more obvious, and set in modern small-town America than in a cosy mid-twentieth-century English village. Think not roses and climbing ivy but overgrown grass and a collection of garden gnomes, one of which is a murder weapon. It's all a bit primitive, but the sort of thing its aficionados will doubtless lap up, wanting more.

I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy, humourus read that kept me guessing (I didn't guess the who dun it!). Very much like Miss Marple (and Poirot) so if you like them you will like this book. All totally unbelievable - having an eighty year old finding dead bodies and running about town (well hobbling with her stick) just added to the flavour of the story. I'm glad the writer kept primarily with the main character and didn't include the police too much in the story. Very well written.
