What’s the single most important thing you can do during pregnancy? What does watching TV do to a child’s brain? What’s the best way to handle temper tantrums? Scientists know. In his New York Times best seller Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina showed us how our brains really work - and why we ought to redesign our workplaces and schools. Now, in Brain Rules for Baby, he shares what the latest science says about how to raise smart and happy children from zero to five. This book is destined to revolutionize parenting. Just one of the surprises: The best way to get your children into the college of their choice? Teach them impulse control. Brain Rules for Baby bridges the gap between what scientists know and what parents practice. Through fascinating and funny stories, Medina, a developmental molecular biologist and dad, unravels how a child’s brain develops - and what you can do to optimize it. You will view your children - and how to raise them - in a whole new light. You’ll learn: Where nature ends and nurture begins. Why men should do more household chores. What you do when emotions run hot affects how your baby turns out, because babies need to feel safe above all. TV is harmful for children under two. Your child’s ability to relate to others predicts her future math performance. Smart and happy are inseparable. Pursuing your child’s intellectual success at the expense of his happiness achieves neither. Praising effort is better than praising intelligence. The best predictor of academic performance is not IQ. It’s self-control. What you do right now - before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and through the first five years - will affect your children for the rest of their lives. Brain Rules for Baby is an indispensable guide.

The book had page number 45 not printed. I ordered a replacement and same issue. In fact the reorder had pages coming off also as binding was very poor. This is not an original book but a photocopy version of very poor quality.
I really want to read it and hence I'm keeping it but ideally I should have returned it.
Pros :
(1) Perfect facts based on authentic Psychological research, not some statements that are shoved on to you.
(2) Very good organization of contents with examples to easily understand.
Cons:
(1) Concentrates only on "what" part. "How" part, e.g, 'How to talk to your baby" "How to punish effectively" etc, i.e, the practicals part of it is not covered. You may need so other book on that which covers practical examples.
(2) Some portions, where he explains "brain functioning" "Genetics" etc, too much of scientific terms and facts which you may feel boring as obviously, you won't need much details.
Some parts of it would require patience and re reading but it is totally worth it, given the take home message.
It will ensure a healthy nervous system and autonomic regulation which will give a child his/her best shot at a good fulfilling life.

I've also started noticing that this book is quoted as recommended reading in many of the parenting books I have brought (respectful parenting, positive parenting, simplicity parenting, etc...)
I will be recommending this book to anyone I know who gets pregnant.

We highly recommend! It is both anecdotal and practical whilst being scientific and heartwarming. HUGELY helpful in that in has made us feel like we have a solid arsenal of the best approach to pregnancy and parenting. It's not a book that tells you how to raise a genius, rather how to raise happy, good, kind humans!!! Recommend highly!
Tip. I bought the kindle version first and quickly realised even with the "notes" function, that It would be much better to have a hard copy to have at hand, enabling us to refer to whenever. So 100% advise just get a hard copy so that you can highlight and peruse at your leisure in the future.

At first I thought it was slow, but once your in your captured by how much the author knows about his subjects(s).
I've also read a lot on toddler tantrums and this too discusses this.
If you are wanting science - this gives it to you in simple terms. The author also uses really good techniques to explain the more complex parts.
I'm a busy simple mother so finding time to read books isn't easy but I was able to read through this before my son changed development stages.
