So the story starts with her plans to go on a trip with her best friend and enjoying the last summer before college. But unfortunately, her father ruins it by his decision to leave them. And they are sent to an island where she meets Jeremiah Crew.
Now Miah is a mysterious and free spirited boy who is capable of making art out of bones. And there starts their bonding which unknowingly turns into a beautiful chemistry. They know it's only one summer they have and they decide to live it like never before without talking about the end and without falling in love, before they realise it's hard to deny when you are so in love and harder to accept the fact that you're in love but are not destined to be together at the end.
Jennifer Niven has some magic in her words!! Real magic. Not the kind we see magicians do. Something more real. That have the power to make or break your life. The way she writes is phenomenal. This book can tell you it's Jennifer Niven and only her who can create magic like the way she does.
She has my heart ever since I've read her All The Bright Places and now reading this has not dissapointed me a bit and I'm glad I read it.
The language is so subtle and artistic that is in itself a huge inspiration to writers out there. The character of Claude is of an aspiring writer who is trying to feel things and spill them into pages.
Overall, Breathless is a light hearted romance combined with friendship, love, heartbreaks and destiny.
I cried and I think I left a piece of my heart behind!
I honestly have no clue where to begin with for this review, I am just way too overwhelmed by it, this was one of my best reads of the year and definitely the best first-love YA I've read so far and I am so glad I got to read it!!
Talking about why you should pick this book up, let's start-
One, It had everything a coming of age book should have, it talks about love, mental health, family dynamics, virginity, feminism and everything else!
Second, Jennifer Niven is hellbent on making all of us cry while we read her books! The writing style, the storyline, the whole concept of moving out of your comfort zones, taking up new paths, settling in and sometimes settling out and finding beauty in the chaos-- Just spoke to me!
Third, Even the acknowledgements are so heart warming!!
Fourth, CLAUDE'S GLOW-UP!! I loved how her character has grown so much while spending her summer with Jeremiah! I love their relationship, how open they are and how they bring out the best in each other! Also, JEREMIAH- the barefooted, super gorgeous Jeremiah Crew!
Fifth, If I could pepper this entire review with some marvelous quotes from the book, I would, and maybe I just will-
"Here is me.
All the messy unattractive things that I keep locked up inside.
Every last, ugly, broken piece.
And he didn't bat an eye.
He just opened his mouth and showed me some of his own messy pieces.
And instead of running away, he kissed me." (😍🥺😍🥺😍🥺)
"Here is where the fire started.
Here is where the first brick fell.
Here is where the floor disappeared.
Here is where I built a new one underneath my feet.
And here is where I began." (🥺😭♥️)
"I am somewhere else in other ways. And this, I know is a part of growing up. The part they don't tell you. That you can find yourself suddenly in another room, one that looks nothing like the one you're used to, and there's no going back- no matter how much you want to- because from now on there is only one here, and the only thing to do is settle in and try to make sense of it and tell yourself that this is your life now. This is what it looks like. And you're going to be okay. You can do this. Because you don't have a choice."
"Sometimes you do things just to make it worse.
Back when I was thirteen and life was at its absolute shittiest, I wanted
something to numb the pain and I found it. It worked for a little while,
but the problem is, you want more, you need more, and before you
know it, you can’t feel anything.” He stares down at his hands. “But
you know what I finally figured out?” He looks up at the fire again.
“You have to feel it. You have to feel it even if you think it’s going to kill
I love this book, oh my god!♥️

I love Jennifer Niven’s writing style; the pages flow almost effortlessly, making the book almost impossible to put down. The characters are great and the descriptive scenery is beautiful. This book was like a mini black-hole; I just could not put it down.
I also loved the subtle references to ‘All The Bright Places’, such as ‘quicksand’ and ‘rooted’. Though, maybe I have just read it too many times, I’ve virtually memorised it cover to cover.
In short, I highly recommend this book!
Jennifer has such a nice writing style and time just flies by while reading. So Breathless was a quick read for sure.
Sadly the storyline was kinda boring.
Just two teenagers getting to know each other and falling in love. It kinda lacked depth for me. I wished for more interesting topics.
If you're looking for a cute, light love story: this one is for you.
If you werw hoping for an "all the bright places" -ish book: u might wanna pass.
