About the Author

Helen Czerski is a physicist, first and foremost, but she's acquired a few other labels along the way: oceanographer, broadcaster, author and bubble enthusiast. Her academic home is the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London, where she studies the physics of ocean bubbles, particularly the ones underneath breaking waves. --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Helen Czerski was born in Manchester. She is a lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department at University College London. As a physicist she studies the bubbles underneath breaking waves in the open ocean to understand their effects on weather and climate.

Helen regularly presents BBC programmes on physics, the ocean and the atmosphere – recent series include Colour: The Spectrum of Science, Orbit, Operation Iceberg, Super Senses, Dara O’Briain’s Science Club, as well as programmes on bubbles, the sun and our weather. She is also a columnist for Focus magazine, shortlisted for PPA columnist of the year in 2014, and has written numerous articles for national newspapers.

She lives in London.

A lovely little book, easy to understand for us non-sciency types, and a great companion to Helen Czerski's BBC documentary Pop! The Science of Bubbles. Each chapter is a page long and they are all informative and delightfully entertaining (I hard-fried my eggs reading about snapping shrimp, cheers Doc).
I hope she writes more, as she has a definite gift for it. Just not about caramel. Nope, no thanks.

My fault entirely. I assumed that since the book was written by an acknowledged expert on bubbles, it would be fairly scientific. It wasn’t. It was written at the middle school level. That is fine and in that regard a five star book but not what I was expecting.
