The lens is definitely original canon and just like their other lenses, build quality is superb. It feels sturdy. However, the focusing ring feels a bit loose. Don't know if it's this particular piece or this lens is generally like that. Will know only when I compare it to another lens.
If you're willing to live with the fact that you won't get an invoice, then this comes at a significant discount to its actual price. That's the trade off on which the buyer has to take a call.
I got this for 8.1k after cashback.
Rugged and strong built with IS feature good for one's not using tripods...

i am using this on a pre-owned Canon EOS 450D,which came with the standard 18-55mm lens. and was looking for a lens with a bit more oomph in it.
Purchased through Amazon from a company called Digiplus and could not fault their service, very fast delivery and £80 cheaper than the same lens would have cost from Jessops
The level of zoom is not staggering, but a good example of what this is perfect for is when you are at the zoo, and can take really clear, close pictures of the animals in their enclosures. It won't make an aeroplane that's far away really detailed, it isn't strong enough, but as a starter for an amateur like me this works well. The construction is OK, though it doesn't feel really solid; the upside is that it is still light, so when on the camera doesn't make it really front heavy.
The quality of the pictures are great, and in the ones I have taken, there has been nothing about the corner quality that has attracted attention, so it clearly isn't an issue of any note in the usage I have put it to.
Essentially this is a good lens
The more I use this lens, the more I love it. I'm sure there are other lenses out there that may do a better job...but for the money, I can't imagine one that's better value for money.
And the lens hood you need is Canon ET-60, which isn't the prettiest of lens hoods, but does do the job.
EDIT: November 2013
I've moved on to L lenses now and have sold this lens. L lenses offer so much more, but then again, they're so much more expensive. I bought this lens as a photography novice, and if I was in that position again, I would buy this lens again. It's still great value for the money and offers a beginner a great step up from the stock lens offering a good range.
I deliberately selected a supplier who was fulfilled by Amazon to ensure that the packaging would be good. For those that don't know what 'fulfilled' means in this context it means that Amazon hold the stock of another supplier in their warehouse then pick and pack it on their behalf. The lens comes in its own Canon box which would be good enough if sent in a sturdy jiffy bag. Amazon put the lens in a bigger box an filled the gap with rolled up brown paper so the lens arrived in perfect condition.
Update a few months on...
I am happy with the lens. You can always spend more and get better but this is a good lens when the light is good. I remain happy with the purchase
I bought this a while ago due to the brilliant reviews it had. Yesterday was the first time I have used it. I went to Whipsnade and I took my 550d with this lens and my 24-105L. When I got home I was totally amazed to see that this lens had out gunned the L in every way. The quality of the images is fantastic from 55 to 250. It is light and doesn't feel like a quality item the way the L lens does but the output didn't just match a lens I paid nearly 5 times as much for, it destroyed it. As both lenses were used on the same body with the same settings there can be no doubt that the better photo's were due to the lens and nothing else. I'm not only so impressed with this lens that I wrote this review, I'm now wondering if I even need to keep the 24-105L??
An amazing lens at an even more amazing price.
An equivalent high spec Canon 'L' series lens is well over £1,500 pounds, so I really wasn't expecting too much from this lens but considering the relatively low price I thought, why not!
Well, I can tell you that you definately won't regret buying this little beauty - I am absolutely delighted with the images I get from this lens & given the (for a Canon Lens) low price, I really can't fault it at all!
It is a very light weight lens, partly due to some external parts being made from Plastic but optically they definately haven't scrimped. It is great for isolated your subject from the background, producing a really wonderful blurred effect.
I use this Canon 55-250mm with a Canon 7D and along with the 15-85mm kit lens I bought with the camera, I am pretty much covered for all my present needs.
Having built in image stabilisation helps for those moments when you need a lower shutter speed & I have taken quite good photo's of still subjects at 1/50th second, hand held :)
The autofocus system on the lens isn't quite as fast as the 15-85mm lens but not far behind & certainly fast enough for my needs. To test the focus tracking on the Canon 7D, I used the 55-250mm to photograph fast moving cars coming towards me on the M27, near to where I live - the camera itself helps in this respect but pretty much all of the images were pretty much tack sharp.
Need I say any more - get your wallet/purse out & order one today. You definately won't be dissapointed.
I just need to find out how to upload images to this site for you guys to see for yourself...
As an amateur photographer I can't justify spending vast amounts of cash on lenses (yet) so for me, this has been a godsend. I simply will not take my SLR out without this. I have a few other lenses but this is by far my favorite.
If you're looking for a budget telephoto which will produce some fantastic results, then this is your lens.
With a foreign trip coming up, I wanted to get something longer, and was looking at several of the independent manufacturers, falling in the 120 to 150 pounds bracket. I discovered this lens, and it seemed unbelievable value, so as they say, the rest is history.
Most impressed with everything about this lens, including its macro capability. Used it at a stage show last weekend, which really pushed the limits. This really showed just how good the IS system can be. I was working at full extension, in stage lighting, and the results were better than I would have expected with 35mm SLR and a zoom half the length.
Can't wait to use it on some sports stuff, and experiment some more. Remarkable value at this price, and great performance.
This lens takes great pictures of my dog as he is running around chasing his ball or other dogs, and at great length as well.
Sorry can't give technical details, but when I saw the price of this lens compared to others, I think I've got a great deal.
