Been shooting on top quality and file sizes range from about 4-6MB. Video is clear although don't expect to be able to zoom when you're filming. Anyways neat for little snapshots. All in all definitely happy with the purchase.
Two things that I wasn't sure about when I was buying this camera:
1) Battery life--considered buying another battery when I read a couple reviews saying the battery only lasts for about 180 shots. Don't know where that comes from, and maybe it stands for pictures taken with the flash on, but I shot easily 500 pictures over a 2 day period without recharging (with no flash--all daytime/scenery shots) so don't stress about this if you have read it
2) Image stabilization...wasn't sure if it was worth the extra few bucks. Now I can say it is DEFINITELY worth the extra few bucks. As soon as you press down that shutter button you can see the IS kick in and it is a thing of beauty.
In summary, very pleased with this little camera.
The x5 optical zoom actually is a little more wide angle that the previous and this is nicer as we tend to do a lot of wide angle imagery (like scenery and aurora).
The 16mp makes the pictures the sharpest and much more editable leaving a good amount of pixels left. The camera is more low light sensitive and we are able to take much sharper (less exposure blur) than in the past without the flash.
The lithium ion battery was also a new feature over AA. We have always preferred AA NImH but they were not performing nearly as well as we had hoped. So far the li-ion is fantastic, long lasting and totally forgettable.
The video is high quality but makes very large files. We have to recompress them later.
Revised: Less than a year later the lens started to fail moving in and out and bits and pieces of something got into the lens assembly, rendering it useless for photos.
Thanks Canon for an excellent product and at a great price!
What I don't like about this camera is the time that it takes to actually take the picture. When trying to capture little ones activities the model has often moved out of focus before the picture snaps. The battery is fine still but I would like to have a battery on stand by for urgent photo shoots. I guess I could just purchase a second battery to have on hand.
Very nice photos and videos.
Very slow to take pictures in low light. Motion blur is bad in low lighting. Hard to take pictures of young kids b/c they move around so much. Lightweight and convenient otherwise. Pictures are quite good outside and in good lighting. Very intuitive and easy to use (for those of us too impatient to read through the whole user's manual.)
Better than the other Canon PowerShots b/c it comes with a cord to attach to computer, battery and charger. Must buy separate memory card (great deals on Amazon) to even use it the first time.
Use Wikipedia to shop between different Canon PowerShot models.
I have a DSLR but find it too big and inconvenient to use a lot of the time. I wanted something small and cheap for my purse for use with my toddler. I keep it in a plastic ziplock baggie in my purse to keep it clean and free from scratches as it does scratch easily and will look old quickly if you do not!
Overall, I'm a happy camper.
The previous was stolen to me from my bag... It was sad.
But it was happy to see the price this time I purchased it.
I recommend this camera, the photos and shots are excellent and it is very easy to use it.
