About the Author

भगवतीचरण वर्मा 30 अगस्त, 1903 को उन्नाव जिले (उ.प्र.) के शफीपुर गाँव में जन्म। शिक्षा: इलाहाबाद से बी.ए., एल.एल.बी.। प्रारम्भ में कविता-लेखन। फिर उपन्यासकार के नाते विख्यात भगवती बाबू 1933 के करीब प्रतापगढ़ के राजा साहब भदरी के साथ रहे। 1936 के लगभग फिल्म कार्पोरेशन, कलकत्ता में कार्य किया। कुछ दिनों ‘विचार’ नामक साप्ताहिक का प्रकाशन-सम्पादन और इसके बाद बम्बई में फिल्म-कथा लेखन तथा दैनिक ‘नवजीवन’ का सम्पादन। आकाशवाणी के कई केन्द्रों में भी कार्य। बाद में, 1957 से मृत्यु-पर्यन्त स्वतंत्र साहित्यकार के रूप में लेखन। उनके बेहद लोकप्रिय उपन्यास ‘चित्रलेखा’ पर दो बार फिल्में बनीं। ‘भूले-बिसरे चित्र’ साहित्य अकादेमी से सम्मानित। पद्मभूषण तथा राज्यसभा की मानद सदस्यता प्राप्त। प्रकाशित पुस्तकें अपने खिलौने, पतन, तीन वर्ष, चित्रलेखा, भूले-बिसरे चित्र, टेढ़े-मेढ़े रास्ते, सीधी सच्ची बातें, सामथ्र्य और सीमा, रेखा, वह फिर नहीं आई, सबहिं नचावत राम गोसाईं, थके पाँव, प्रश्न और मरीचिका, युवराज चूण्डा, चाणक्य धुप्पल (उपन्यास); प्रतिनिधि कहानियाँ, मेरी कहानियाँ, मोर्चाबन्दी तथा सम्पूर्ण कहानियाँ (कहानी-संग्रह); मेरी कविताएँ, सविनय और एक नाराज़ कविता (कविता-संग्रह); वसीयत, सम्पूर्ण नाटक (नाटक); अतीत के गर्त से, कहि न जाय का कहिए (संस्मरण); साहित्य के सिद्धान्त तथा रूप (साहित्यालोचन)। निधन: 5 अक्टूबर, 1981.
