3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cover, Torn Pages
By Aliya Khan on 23 January 2021
The delivery was excellent. The cover of the book is in perfect condition, but a few pages are torn at the end :( I’m sad about it. Otherwise, it’s excellent!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good plot but poor execution.
By Anukriti chaturvedi on 13 November 2020
⭐⭐.5

"Would you prefer the long version or the short one?" she asks curtly.
"The long version." I say.

Well this book was a long version I didn't need.

I love retellings, more than the original tbh. I like that female pov which is not "Let's kiss the woman lying in the middle of the forest, in some eternal slumber, without her consent & when she wakes up, let's get married. Yay!" 🙅🏻‍♀️.

TW: Domestic violence, curtailment of all the rights.

When I heard about this poc Cinderella retelling, all about smashing the patriarchy & #Igbtqt rep, I was very intrigued. We've the city of Lille, where girls of 16 years of age have to attend a court mandated ball, to get a husband & we follow Sophia, our protagonist, who has her eyes on just 1 girl, as she tries to rebel against the 2 centuries old practice with some help & her plans to overthrow the tyrannical monarchy.

Now, I don't get why ALL the problems, misery, sorrows & unfair situations that womxn face have been put on the females of the world the author has spun. I believe, when you put something like abuse in a story, it has to make sense, like it needs to have a purpose to make the story go forward; you can't put it just for the sake that it's the in topic rn.

This book feels as if it's trying too hard to gain the sympathy of it's readers by showing all the cruel things that are happening to the "poor females" & the
naivety of Sophia, + the idealism & attitude of saving the world, just irritated me. I don't think I'm cut out for 16 yo trying to save the world with no concrete plan & just bc they woke up one day & wanted to rebel, with dialogues which felt quite preachy & patronizing.

The romance & sass felt forced & cringy, the characters felt 2 dimensional, the world building was severely lacking, writing was quite simple & the "twists" - it was just hodge podge of many tropes, making no sense! It did try to clear "misconceptions" about the evil stepsister, which I liked.

Overall, even tho the plot sounded great, execution was terrible. Many people might still enjoy it tho, since it was a fast read And had magic in abundance.

I seriously don't like bashing a novel and love to support authors but I'm just putting up my honest thoughts here.
