Lisa Kleypas is the author of a number of historical romance novels that have been published in fourteen languages. In 1985, she was named Miss Massachusetts and competed in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City. After graduating from Wellesley College with a political science degree, she published her first novel at age twenty-one. Her books have appeared on the New York Times bestseller lists. My first Lisa Kleypas.... What have I been doing all these years. This woman is awesome. This book is awesome too.... Wastrel rake Devon Ravenal comes into an Earldom he doesn't want... But then discovers that his cousin's widow is something he does want. A lot. Cue a fabulous transformation for him as he becomes aware of some things that are actually more important than his own pleasures, he discovers a purpose in life and his heroine discovers that not all men are bullies, or bastards. Sweet... I followed this one up with a binge-read of the whole Wallflower series and the rest of the Ravenals... Is there actually anything better than discovering an auto-buy author with a humungus backlist?!!

Annoying heroine and unconvincing love story

I love Lisa Kleypas. I even loved the first 1/3 of this book - it was full of promise, and it felt like it was building up to be an exciting enemies-to-lovers romance, which is one of my favourite tropes. Unfortunately, however, as the story progressed and we got to know more about the lead characters, I found myself more and more annoyed at the heroine instead of growing to love her (which is what I had assumed would happen). She was hypocritical, self-righteous, and just overall unpleasant. This was especially true towards the last 10% of the book, where she meddled with Helen and Winterborne’s relationship and treated Helen so patronisingly it was actually ridiculous. The hero was not as annoying, but he was also nowhere near the kind of hero I would expect from the same mind that gave us Sebastian St Vincent. I just don’t see how their relationship progressed or why they fell in love with each other. The big declaration at the end felt rushed, and they didn’t even appear in the epilogue. Overall, I feel that this book was more of a long prologue for the second book in the series rather than its own love story.

Like everyone else, I was waiting impatiently for this book, and on the whole I wasn't disappointed. Lisa Kleypas writes so well, and although my own knowledge of the progress of that time is limited, I think this book delved more deeply into subjects that must have been life-changing for people, aristocrats and commoners alike, which I really appreciated, and I felt I was learning something, too. Since this is the beginning of a series, inevitably the scene has to be set for the other players and takes something away from the central romance. Unfortunately, like others, I didn't find the romance convincing - I liked Devon's character, because essentially you got what you expected; a good-looking, self-serving rogue, who was used to taking what he wanted and hang the consequences, changing into someone who became a caring person as he took on the mantle of his new, unwanted [initially] responsibilities. I understood his attitude to Kathleen, because as far as he was concerned, it was perfectly okay to be attracted to someone and have an affair without any strings attached. My problem was with Kathleen's personality; she was either putty in his hands or tearing into him, and I never got a handle on her character. I never felt the connection [other than sexual] between the two of them, and their rather sudden mutual declaration of love was rather dumped in our laps at the end. Kleypas heroes such as Derek Craven and Sebastian were shown gradually falling in love without being aware of it or even wanting it, which for me is more realistic.

Having said that, I enjoyed the book and have already preordered the next one - I think shades of Winnifred Hathaway meets Harry Rutledge, perhaps, characters from two different books in the Hathaway series.

It is so difficult for an author's new book NOT to be compared with earlier books, especially in a series. 'Devil in Winter' is a great favourite of mine, so everything else I read by Kleypas is inevitably judged by that standard, which isn't really fair to the author, whose other books and series are very very good indeed. Read, enjoy and look forward to more by this excellent writer

Could not enjoy the book as I though the heroine to be really unlikable. I spent the entire time reading exasperated at her snobby attitude to a secondary character (lead in the 2nd book) just because he was in trade, and purposefully and actively trying to stop the happiness of her sister in law. Couldn't even finish the book and could not understand how the hero found her remotely attractive.

I was less enthralled by this book than by Kleypas' other romance novels. This had a very typical "explosive male lead and explosive female lead have feelings for each other but are bad at communicating" plot that many romance novels like to use. I like to understand characters and will often agree with any outburst if I understand where they're coming from and why, but I felt sometimes this book would just make out Kathleen to be a bit of a petulant screaming child with Devon and for little reason. As such, I found it hard to really appreciate the romantic bits. I will be reading the next in the series hoping to read Kleypas' usual wonderful style.
