No in-depth discussion available. It is good only for revision purposes, for a beginner this book will not lead anywhere when it comes yo human scale, basics, proportions and detailing. Its more pf an over view for-exam preparations.

A great comprehensive book that is great value for money.

For those people like me that are not naturally that good at drawing, but want to improve, this book is fantastic. It is so comprehensive, covering a range of different types of drawings and techniques. What I particularly like is that the step-by-step guides are both detailed and easy to follow. Like with anything, it takes practice and you will not get there overnight! But this is certainly not related to what the book offers.
The only potential drawback is that there is a lot of detail in this book and this might prove to be a bit daunting! However, this is not a criticism of the book, it is just something that should be taken into account.
This is a great book for a great price! No, I have not turned into the next Da Vinci, but I have definitely learned some great techniques. I would recommend this book to all fellow aspiring artists.

Great book for a beginner, and probably much further than that!

Had a flick through this big book, covers a wide variety of pencil techniques and styles, in an easy to follow format. The first few exercises took this guy in his 40s, who hadn’t drawn since school, to drawing a shaded and shadowed cube and sphere, and then drew a passable coffee cup. On day one, in a couple of hours! Excited to see what I can learn in time from this. Buy with confidence.

Not especially beginner-friendly

I expected more step by step for beginners tuition in this book but it’s lacking in that, and whilst it’s great to see what can be achieved (in the form of completed drawings) there’s nothing very much to show you how you reach that point which is disappointing.
Also, it’s a very heavy paperback book and it frustratingly won’t stay open so that you can refer to examples whilst you attempt to draw.

A comprehensive, if not altogether encyclopedic, volume. Mr Barber takes the budding artist from basic principles onward.
The only caveat I would issue is that this is an expansion of his ' The Fundamentals of Drawing' in itself an excellent primer.

A realistic approach to understanding the fundamentals of drawing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2018Verified Purchase
This book is a good guide to any budding artist, or anyone wishing to improve their own drawing skills. A good range of techniques and related exercises are suggested. It is hard to see how anyone with an interest in drawing would not benefit from the practice of these. One of the features is the authors ability to relate to known artists and how they used certain techniques and methods to great effect. As a result not only does the reader have the opportunity to improve their drawing skills, but they will also gain a deeper appreciation of the use of these skills by great artists throughout history.
