Catherine Moloney is a Liverpool writer of Irish-American heritage. After graduating in Jurisprudence from Jesus College (University of Oxford), she was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn. Despite qualifying as a barrister, her first love was English; this led to a PhD in English Literature at Birkbeck College (University of London).

In her academic career, she lectured and published widely on the subject of tuberculosis and nineteenth-century literature, but somehow managed to avoid contracting galloping hypochondria and turned her attention to crime fiction.

I'm sorry. I really wanted to like this as I had got the boxed set of 8 books, however I got a very small way into the first one before my brain gave way. Apparently the scene is set in a city with a secondary school, a cathedral and a choir school adjacent, OK that's fine - then suddenly, although there are still people around, the cathedral and the choir school seem to be in the countryside - bordered by marshes, with a cliff with caves with catacombs and a slurry pit and a dilapidated country estate for the school's sponsor to live in??? The bleached bones are at once in the slurry pit and the cemetery and the catacombs. Maybe the slurry pit is in the catacombs? As I say, I gave up.

I can only comment on book1 as that is all I have read so far, the use of phrases in Latin and of lines from poems was an unnecessary distraction. It became clear very early on who the perpetrators were and the characters were for me shallow and single dimensioned. The only reasonable character was DS Noakes a 'diamond in the rough' but the Lead and his girlfriend really annoyed me, I actually wanted the girlfriend to die!! All through it felt like the author had an agenda and was going to hit us with it at every opportunity. I will read book 2 now, perhaps the author has honed her craft and the characters will be more rounded and fleshed out, also if I am lucky maybe the girlfriend will meet an unhappy fate.

I’m sorry but I didn’t get very far into the first book before my brain gave up! Normally if I’m struggling with a book I will persevere to give it the chance to improve, but I’m sorry I just couldn’t stick with this. The girlfriend of the inspector was lining up to become some sort of Nancy Drew character and to be honestI just disengaged and lost interest, it didn’t help that the author concentrated more on the big fancy words rather than the actual context of the story. I won’t be trying again and nor will I be buying anymore books. Y this author. Real shame as I love a good police procedural box set!

There is something strangely old-fashioned about these stories. The pairing of the ascetic, sensitive, damaged detective with his working-class, uncultured but loyal partner seems dated. The author seems confused about his setting too - there are fleeting references to modern technology, although it is never really used, yet on a couple of occasions female characters are described as having 'marcel-waved' hair - a process last seen about a century ago! Having said all that, the stories themselves are fine - typical British whodunnits; if you can put up with the lead character's constant need to throw in Latin or Shakespearian quotations, and his tendency to rely on mystical visions to solve problems, they are an enjoyable read.

The first book in the series was based around a church boys school. Some reference to religion was inevitable but I was constantly looking up words in a dictionary to get an idea what was going on. The story was exceptionally good with well defined characters and intricate twists. Book two was based around an academy which had nothing to do with the church but somehow the author managed to liberally infiltrate the tale with religious references. Like the previous book there were very strange and totally unrelated verses which only detracted from flow of the story. But again the tale was good with a realistic depiction of human frailties. I was prepared to tolerate book three until I saw that it was based in a convent! I decided that enough was enough and deleted the compendium.
The author is obviously very religious and well educated but she really should learn who her audience is. Readers of crime fiction are seldom avid high church goers and know words that are not in every day use. It is a great pity for take out the obscure language, quotations and religious references and you have a cracking good read!
