I used this product to attach security film to the window frame, and before I used this I didn't understand why this particular product was needed, I do now. This stuff comes out like a thick glue and will stick to anything. I have used many different types of caulking and liquid nails type products but this stuff takes it to the next level. Some advice: use painters or masking tape to limit where this stuff goes, and just in case make sure to have some mineral spirits handy as this is not water based, and will not wash off, as I found out the hard way (which was my fault, didn't read all the instructions)
On the down side, this stuff is very expensive and as such is only used for very specific applications, but works very well for those applications.
Used this to increase the effectiveness of the security film I had installed at my house. Basically you apply a triangular bead around the edge of the window so it attaches the film to the window frame. If the window is broken, even if the glass around the edge is broken the film will still prevent debris or people from entry. This is the industry standard stuff and it is easy to apply.
This stuff is amazing for strength. It is pretty much like other silicone but has a higher tensile strength- used in high rise glazing. Very hard to keep where you want it so taping off the surrounding areas is wise. It is really sticky and stringy so you don't want to use in high wind. Only draw back is shelf life- use it before it expires and don't keep old tubes.
This material is really great for my applications. I used it to bed a new hatch on my boat and also as a glue/sealant in a bathroom that I am renovating. Both applications worked very well. There was about 3 to 4 weeks between uses and the tube was not dried out as I expected. However, the material sets up in the application relatively quickly when exposed to air. I love it and will be purchasing more.
995 is a truly premium product. It has a smooth glossy texture that sets to a tough but resilient rubber. It sticks to plastics better than other products I've used. It sticks well to stainless steel also without any primer. It fully satisfies my need for a white structural silicone in that it holds well and supports a lot of weight ( 1 lb per square inch rating for unsupported and 20 lb per sq for supported.) I'm holding a 9" 20 lb pyramid of glass to a stainless steel bracket. It is important to note that silicone needs up to 7 days to set fully inside. In a couple of days it only sets to about 1/4" and to get to 1/2" it can take several weeks based on a test I did. (If you have the silicone exposed from two sides you get it set twice as fast.) Just remember that it needs exposure to the moisture in the air to set and as it sets it prevents the moisture from reaching further inside. Don't just push a lot of silicone into a joint. Use a backing rod and keep the width below 12mm and allow enough time for a full set. It is very strong and stiff and a 1/4" joint will hold a lot of weight. Plus it also gives +-50% so it is flexible to allow for expansion and contraction. Just form the bead (with backing rod if needed) well so you get good performance. Dow Corning offers great service and lots of helpful info on its site.
