5.0 out of 5 starsWonderful!
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 10 June 2018
The Duke of Ashbury is a scarred war hero. Emma Gladstone is a seamstress. She lands on his doorstep to claim money for a wedding she made for his ex-fiancee. The Duke is impressed by Emma's pluck and wit. Also that she didn't want to puke upon looking at his disfigured body. Sparks fly. The Duke ends up offering marriage to her with certain conditions.
1. It is a marriage of convenience.
2. They will have sex with no lights and no kidding.
3. When Emma gets pregnant, she will have her own house in the country to raise the child.
Emma begs to differ.
1. They will have dinner together every night.
2. They will have conversation.
3. There WILL be kissing.
The whole book is strewn with their carnal activities but it never goes overboard or sleazy. The chemistry between the two is clearly perceived and their fallible in love, a given. I loved the humor between the two protagonists. Usually the heroine, at some point feels scared of the hero, but not this one. Thank God. She gives as good as she gets which I liked. No simpering, no kow- towing, no nervous twisting of the hands.
I liked this book and would definitely recommend it.

If you love to see how two battered souls fall in and of course passion ka big part of it, then pick it up. Pick it up for dry wit and wonderful humour and then leave it without much expectation.

I was really keen to read this one as I loved the sound of it from the blurb. I did not preorder it though, I waited for reviews and of course they are all glowing aside from one 3 star rating. The start was good. The seamstress h arrives at the reclusive H's ducal mansion with the intention of getting the money she was owed for making the duke's ex-fiancee's wedding dress. Her trick was arriving in said wedding dress. The H is entranced by the mouthy h and immediately proposes a marriage of convenience. She doesn't believe him and she grabs her money and leaves. I'm puzzled about the money btw because as far as I understood, the h worked for someone else. Nevermind that. The H is badly scarred from a rocket detonation during the war and a good portion of his face and body are scarred and as a result he has loads of issues. The H then approaches the h after closing time the next evening and they go for a walk. They end up in a bad area and are attacked but the duke fights them off. The H won't take no for an answer this time and they duly get married. He sets some rules for the marriage, which include having sex in the dark. She counters with dinners and conversation. Sounds really cute right? However, I forgot about Ms Dare's penchant for animals. I could cope with the h's crazy cat but her friends menagerie was too much for me. Here is a quote:
"She was saved from answering when a pincushion nestled in a nearby darning basket unfurled itself and toddled away. "Was that a hedgehog?" Penny's voice dropped to a whisper. "Yes, but the poor dear's terribly shy. On account of her traumatic youth, you see."

Other things bugged me too, like some of the language is really modern. I looked up "get stuffed" and the furthest back I could trace it to was last century. It's an expression I grew up using in the 80's. The h also signs and reads her own wedding contracts and even asks the H if he doesn't read stuff before signing it. Maybe it's just me.

Certain themes were fun though. For instance the way the h kept coming up with different terms of endearment for the H, because she didn't like his given names.

This book had real potential but sadly never lived up to it. I'm going to do the author a favour and avoid her books from now on.

3.0 out of 5 stars I thought this was a historical romance..

I really wanted to love this book, I really did. It was just so disappointing in so many ways. I gave it three stars because I really do like this author and I believe she's a great writer, but I will certainly be more selective about which of her books I buy in future. My first and major problem with this story is that in a book that is 300+ pages, the hero and heroine are in love and aware of it at about page 124. That leaves a lot of book for what? Well, I'll tell you: it left a lot of room for gratuitous sex that neither drove the plot nor affected the story. Between the hero bending her over the bed post and the billiard table and using blindfolds and buzz words I felt like the publishers (or maybe the author?) were simply pandering to the 50 Shades crowd. That is exactly why I never read '50 Shades' because I wasn't interested in that type of interaction between characters, but hey, I get it shoved down my throat in this pseudo historical anyway. Lucky me.
Then there were the partially developed sub-plots like the spinsters society (that may already be a different series and if not, get ready, because I'm sure it will be). The spinster characters were interesting but definitely only there for filler. I was disappointed by the regrettably incomplete subplot about the boy who wanted to be the hero's sidekick. (Sorry, it may have been finished, but by the time I got that far in the book I was pretty much skimming just to be done with it). Too many references to something that didn't even exist in the time period (super-hero's, sidekicks, catchphrases, etc.) that it continually jerked me out of the story. And while I enjoyed that sub-plot, it still smacked so hard of a contemporary setting that it was impossible to suspend my belief. After all, I bought this as a supposed historical, right?
Well the author did give us a little history lesson on her use of badminton in the book. Forget the contemporary language, behaviors and aforementioned sexcapades, but lets make sure we address the hero playing badminton and not 'shuttlecock'. Seriously?
Tessa Dare is fantastic at witty repartee between characters, the Shakespeare was a nice attempt at reclaiming the lost historical setting (though not nearly enough). The pacing is great and the writing is tight, it does move well, it just wasn't a historical romance. More like a modern day romp through History-ville which is not what I'm looking for when I pick up a historical romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Guess it's time to give up my HR-escape hobby.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 27 August 2017

(2.5 stars) For the past few years I've enjoyed reading books and reviewing them here on Amazon. My escape genre of choice was HRs. There were many intelligent and entertaining stories to be found by many authors, but in the past four years or so either I or the books have gotten stale, superficial, vapid and often absurd. I don't read HRs to laugh at silly antics by time-traveling 21st century characters sent back to olden times, but that's what most new releases are supplying. Even new releases by former favorite authors.

Case in point is this new Dare book which everybody else loves. Well, I do admit to truly enjoying the first couple of chapters, anachronisms be darned. The interactions between the H and h and their snappy dialogue was humorous and had me entertained, chuckling often. Then it all went south on me. The h meets up with three young women (who are obviously being set up for their own future romances) who have the strangest and most anachronistic behavior imaginable in 1800s London. They were too absurd for me to enjoy. And the H wanders around the streets at night getting into brawls and other trouble, frightening his fellow night wanderers because of his scars and disfigurement, receiving the sobriquet "Monster of Mayfair".

This is a Beauty and the Beast story. It's a socioeconomic-divide romance. It's a learning to overcome physical and emotional scars story. It's a comedy. It's sometimes not a comedy. It's schizo. The H of the genre HR is only loosely to be applied here and, in addition, I couldn't feel any possible poignancy and emotional depth of the main characters because the silliness and absurdity kept getting in the way.

So I'm adding my critical review to the handful of others who were brave enough to give this 2-3 stars. I'm happy that so many readers loved this. I'm also envious. Wish I could find a new HR to love.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love Dare, but...
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 30 August 2017

Where to start? This Beauty and the Beast novel gets off to a galloping start, with a surprise match and witty banter that had me chuckling quite frequently, and reading choice passages aloud to my husband (who *also* chuckled). In short, the same Dare-to-the-bone humor is in evidence here that ran strong through her Spindle Cove series (and I barked a laugh when Ash makes a veiled reference to that seaside community). So why the three star review for one of my top five favorite HR authors?

The juxtaposition of the serious and the screwball elements just doesn't gel, and I kept expecting threads to be retained and stitched through to the conclusion (pardon the seamstress pun). We are told Ash drove some of his friends away, though we gather his temper and not his disfiguring scars are to blame. Good friends would understand and would have approached him to reconnect after he "comes out" for Emma (no spoiler, as you know he would in a redemption romance). Instead, he still lives in limited isolation, save for Emma, some of Emma's newest, spinster friends, and his servants. (Oh, and Ash's long-suffering butler, Khan, is by far the best character in the novel.) Emma also leaves at least one friend behind at the dressmaker's shop when she rises in the world. In spite of a collection of supporting characters in the quirky spinsters who gather to socialize (and who belong in Spindle Cove), an unbelievable pre-teen with aspirations to become a night-prowling superhero, and a dress shop client in trouble, something still feels off.

I think it's this: in the final wash, the tragic histories on the parts of both Emma and Ash meld awkwardly with the witty banter and quirky humor. And while Emma shows physical symptoms of her earlier nightmare, Ash, who is far more physically and emotionally damaged, shows not a sign of the post-traumatic stress (panic attacks, nightmares...) we would expect from someone sporting such horrific war wounds from Waterloo, where casualties ran high. So while I'd rate the humor a full five stars (very few comedic authors or even movies make me LOL), I'd rate the story's verisimilitude at two, wishing I could love it more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical but fun historical romance
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 29 April 2020

I picked this up during a severe reading slump. Romance novels like this are typically very simple and easy to read, and generally quick to fly through. And it worked exactly as needed. It’s simply a fun historical romance, and if you like others, I’m sure you’ll like this one.

The Duke of Ashbury has his entire right side of his body covered in a terrible battle scar after being hit by a cannon. He needs a wife after his last engagement fell through in order to produce an heir to his dukedom. Emma Gladstone is a seamstress who comes charging into his house wearing a wedding gown she designed which was commissioned by his ex-fiancee, and she needs payment for it. Why did she have to wear the dress up to his door? I have no idea, but I guess the man needs a very obvious sign to get the romance plot moving. And he took that sign and proposed marriage to her on the spot. He includes a list of demands, mainly to hide his shame of his ugly scars. Emma is not one to go quietly however. She has her own reasons for accepting the proposal, and her own demands for her future husband to meet.

Again, it’s simply a very fun historical romance and nothing more. It at least does not follow any poor troupes of miscommunication or cheating. It is mainly a marriage of convenience plot along with self-loathing that spurs into romance and acceptance. If that’s what you need, then pick this one up.

Slightly bonkers , over steamy and wholly unlikely in parts but the conversation and repartee between Ash and Emma is such fun . Yes, it’s contemporary talk rather than Regency but the writing is quick and witty and my advice would be don’t get hung up on historical accuracy , just enjoy the crazy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Had to persevere but did enjoy some of this

There are some moments that made me chuckle and some lovely moments between Emma and Ash, and all the character's actually. I liked that these are less stuffy character's, more quirky, compared to the norm in historical romance books. But there are issues. I almost gave up on this but it does get better. The beginning chapters feel more like a mocking, farcical take on a recency story because of the wording used. There are unrealistic scenes, like servants wouldn't care about not having lots of work to do or having posh, stuck up people to serve, surely. Then the numerous failed attempts by Ash and Emma to bed each other, especially the cat attack,oh boy bot believable.

The book has not been formatted, so scenes all run in to the other. It needs editing. But there are some nice scenes. I just would not recommend you pay this price though. It could use more work for the price. More detail is also needed in the intimate scenes., for my liking at least It's a nice story with nice characters, nothing to excite and not one I would re-read but it's okay if you're looking for a nice enough read with less formal recency story with quirky characters.
