In Vedic literature, the Earth is called mrityusthana or 'the place of death' because everything on Earth eventually dies. But with every death there is a rebirth - there is renewal. We see this cycle of life and death in plants every year, every season. In human terms this cycle of life and death and our individual place within it is the most important concept in Vedic astrology. We are part of a greater destiny that we must act out. We fear death because from our perspective life is the only reality, but life is just another experience along the way; understanding this principle is the key to using Vedic astrology with all its insights in your life.
The soul is born into a physical body to enjoy life - but not to become attached to it. The rays of the Sun fall everywhere - on a rubbish heap or in a beautiful garden - but their purity is always intact. It is important to understand right from birth that we will die; this understanding gives us the courage to become detached from our surroundings, to break through the entanglements of earthly life and regain the purity we are in danger of losing when we reincarnate. But the breaking-through can only happen when we become aware that changes need to be made. We need to stay calm during the periods of pain and realise it is just the shedding of a skin that will lead us to purity within. After all, we have to experience something before we can consciously give it up: the soul has to experience life so that it can finally be given up. Through multiple lives we rid ourselves of desires and attachments until our souls see the light. Vedic astrology is the science of this light.
I feel that many people in the West are moving towards higher consciousness because they've had everything they could, materially. Unfortunately, in India and the East, where poverty is so prevalent, people used to be extremely spiritual but they are now going backwards; in a sense they need to experience the money and material wealth, so they can then choose to give them up.
At every important stage of life, the chart is studied again. Hindus are meant to carry out 'shodasa karmas' (sixteen important functions) in their lives between birth and death: education, marriage, children and so on. We use our understanding of the birth chart and the transiting planets to ensure that each of these is completed at the best time to fulfil our karmic potential. Vedic astrology is not man being controlled by the stars, but man using the stars to enhance his life. The law of karma is about choice, not retribution. The word 'karma' literally means 'action'. Every action we take in any lifetime - past, present or future - is our karma. If we can address the issues created by actions in past lives, we give our souls the chance to mature and move towards the ultimate goal of enlightenment.
Vedic astrology recognises that as human beings we have a difficult task assigned to us. We have to live our present life and try to relate it to both the past and the future. Karma phal - the fruits of our actions - is what we study when we draw up a birth-chart. It can help us answer the difficult questions of existence: how will we reconcile the actions necessary for a successful life in this incarnation, considering the subtle influence exerted by the eternal aspects of life, and again how has the past conditioned our present; can we improve the quality of our future lives by our actions today?
Jyotish works on very deep levels. In this book we will be attempting to understand not only the material and physical side of our lives, but also the subtle, eternal aspects. Your growing knowledge of the fundamental principles will reveal layers of yourself that may previously have been hidden or misunderstood; things that either may delight you, or that maybe you are not ready to deal with yet. Take time. Astrology is a long journey of self-discovery. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.
