Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Holiday Murder mystery!
By _cortana.bookreads_ on 21 May 2022
Evil Under the Sun is one of the books I personally like ,when it comes to the detective and crime fiction genre! The story is basically about the murder of the infamous stage actress Arlena Marshall , a flirtatious woman and second wife to Kenneth Marshall. Poirot meets the family during his vacation in Devon and eventually finds himself drawn into the investigation to find out Arlena's murderer , who was apparently strangled to death by a man in an isle called Pixy Cove.

Evil Under the Sun is undoubtedly a must read for everyone! The plot is fabulous. The ensemble of the cast was simply brilliant , with men from every section of life. The book also has multiple subplots and the way it depicted the mindset of Kenneth Marshall's teen daughter is just way more than mere words can explain. As always, Poirot's brilliance left me spell bound and I found it difficult to stop reading the book. You guys should definitely give it a try and let me know

4.0 out of 5 stars I really like the book, but if you want to start Agatha Christie.. Don't start with this one.
By Mayuri and Robin on 28 August 2021
Agatha Christie is my favorite author undoubtedly. Her writing style, thinking, plots have always hooked me into the book from the beginning. Evil Under the Sun is no such different. But, yes after reading many Agatha Christie's books, this book is not so comparable to them too.
The story sets in a beautiful location on Jolly Roger Hotel, Smugglers' Island, Leathercombe Bay. The guests here are of different age groups and occupation, including Hercule Poirot. By the death of Arlena Stuart, everything comes to a standstill. A killer is in the hotel!!! Who is the killer then? The unhappy stepdaughter, the husband or someone else? It's true, Hercule Poirot won't get any holiday how much hard he tries 😅. The story contains sexual tension, jealousy and so many things.. But in the end... (No, I won't tell, you all have to read it to find out).

4.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!
By Ananya Canakapalli on 28 November 2021
Evil Under The Sun was another extraordinary book by Agatha Christie. It is a perfect murder mystery to read.

Hercule Poirot is back again with his intelligence to crack this murder and track the murderer(s). Poirot never ceases to impress the readers with his detective skills. The most enjoyable parts of Agatha Christie’s books are the interrogations done by Poirot. In the end, Poirot’s monologue was classic!

Fans of murder mystery MUST read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read!
By Amazon Customer on 29 April 2020
"It is romantic, yes,' agreed Hercule Poirot.' It is peaceful. The sun shines. The sea is blue. But you forget, Miss Brewster, there is evil everywhere under the sun." .
.
Jolly Roger Hotel, Smugglers' Island, Leathercombe Bay ,a safe haven from the hustle & bustle of cities was the perfect & exclusive retreat . The guests at the hotel
never imagined in their wildest dream that there was evil lurking around the corner, ready to strike. But then they had already announced Arlena Stuart as the epitome of evil. Was she really wicked or just a pawn in someone's hand?

So this book contains the usual elements of an Agatha Christie mystery , #HerculePoirot on the scene, lots of suspects and all this with a dose of glitz & glamour. Who murdered her then? Her unhappy step-daughter or the disgruntled wife of her lover. Or was it her husband who might have come to know about her misdemeanours. Or could the murderer be her husband's old love interest. Not to mention the other guests & staff of the hotel who wanted to settle some old score with her . Everyone is a suspect & everyone has perfect alibi.

Although a bit slow at starting, the story starts gaining momentum from mid onwards. I tried guessing the murderer's name ,but ended up coming empty handed. The big reveal was totally unexpected & mind-blowing. The sheer genius the way it was planned & executed left me gobsmacked & spellbound.

Come, & take a dip in this terrific cocktail of sun kissed beaches, glamour, jealousy & murder mystery!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A story set by the seaside!
By Nazarin on 30 August 2021
Christie is one of my favourite authors and her works are definitely mood changers. I wonder why Poirot has to deal with murders everytime he went on holidays? Is he cursed? Like c'mon, let him rest for some time! Poor old Poirot!

Set by a seaside, this murder mystery involves a lot of suspects, mostly women. Beautiful Arlena Stuart was hated by almost everyone and each of them has very clear motives to kill her. The murder was quite puzzling and I loved the religious fanatic part! We all try to figure out the murderer, but people, let me remind you, it's not as easy as you think.

It was a satisfying read and you should know that it mitigated my sporadic reading slump! But it's not one of Christie's best works I think, Evil Under the Sun is a kind of story that keeps you thrilled to the very end and fade away from your mind after you finish it. It can't be included in my top 10 Christie list, but totally recommend to a beginner as it's not a disappointing read.

PS: I recieved the book with a different cover, it's good I must say, but not as pretty as the old vintage cover in the product's picture.
