How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Bought this for my 2 and 4 year old grandsons who were mesmerized by the magic found in fireflies in the dark night....we proceded with a canning jar and filled it up with Dollar store mini stringlights, to create our own fireflies in a jar....which led right back to the book, again and again!💫✨

This is a very heart-warming story that makes one want to walk outside in one's PJs and look for Fireflies. A great read aloud for the young ones. Can use it also to talk similes with your older young ones!

I was hesitant to buy this book after noting several of the poor reviews. But, really those reviewers seem to be making a mountain out of a mole hill. Yes, there is an illustration of a boy poking holes into a metal lid with a pair of scissors and yes he is holding them incorrectly but, really this page just allowed me to discuss with my son why he shouldn't hold scissors that way, what was the appropriate tool to use for such a job etc. I probably would never have had that conversation otherwise and yes he probably would have used scissors like that to poke holes into something and injured himself or not (like many of us have done as children ourselves). The story is really sweet and brought back some great memories for me of chasing and catching fireflies when I was younger. It is nice to see a children's book done in black and white for a change. The artist does a beautiful job capturing the moment. Easy read that my 4 year old asks me to read again and again.

This is such a fun book to prepare for summer. I read it to my class as part of Rooted in Reading for 2nd grade. The author uses descriptions to tell a story without actually using exact wording - example “I ran up the stairs, two at a time” to show how excited he was to go catch fireflies.

This is such a sweet bedtime read for the summer! My kids have enjoyed going out in the dark night looking for fireflies with flashlights. I can see this being a favorite summer time read for years to come.

I'm a first grade teacher and used this book as a mentor text to teach personal narrative writing and sensory details. It's a lovely book and is great for a sweet read-aloud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Beetles!

Reminded me of my youth in Ontario, Canada!
I wanted to introduce my grandkids who live in BC to these amazing beetles. They have never seen them!
This is a great little book dealing with the wish of all children to catch these "flashing lights" in an old mason jar, and subsequently realizing that they are their best when left where nature intended them.
I found a glow in the dark "Firefly t-shirt" to go along with the book!

Hasn't almost everyone, at one time or another, captured fireflies on a warm summer evening? This story tells about such an activity. All you need is a jar with air holes punched in the lid and the patience to carefully collect these lightning bugs and, of course, your parent's permission. It is fun to collect the insects, then to go to a very dark place (like your bedroom) and watch the bugs light up and throw a dull glow all over your bedroom. But, don't forget to let the lightning bugs go free outside before you go to sleep...Tomorrow is another day and you can collect more lightning bugs then. Have fun and enjoy reading about one of my favorite bugs, other than lady bugs.
