Product description

From AudioFile

Hugh Fraser is Captain Hastings in BBC Television's productions of the Hercule Poirot stories. As it turns out, he can also read a Hercule Poirot story very well indeed. For BBC fans, his Poirot sounds remarkably like David Suchet's version of the role--short, round, precise, and Belgian. He also gives oral definition to the other widely varying characters--everyone from a ride-to-the-hounds country fellow to an impoverished, very particular retired nanny. It all concerns the death of famous painter Amyas Crane. Sixteen years earlier, his wife was imprisoned for murdering him. She died in prison. Her now grown daughter believes that her mother may have been innocent. But was she? Poirot, ably supported by Hugh Fraser, will find out. Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melancholic Murder Mystery!
By Divya on 28 March 2022
Description: An emotional Christie with a dramatic, art-centered plot. The power of art plays a major role in the story. The story depicts how guilt, vengeance, and love can disguise their true nature and force us to do irrational deeds.

Plot: At the request of a woman named Lucy Crale, Poirot re-investigates a famous cold case.

Lucy is the daughter of Amyas Crale and Caroline Crale. Ten years ago, Amyas Crale was poisoned to death. His wife Caroline Crale was found guilty of his murder. Caroline suffered imprisonment and died in prison.

But Lucy is convinced that her mother is innocent and she wants to know the truth. Poirot reinvestigates the case for her. Poirot interviews Caroline's lawyer and the Five Witnesses (The Five Little Pigs). All the witnesses give Poirot different versions of the same story. But Poirot with his little grey cells analyzes the subtleties of their stories and discovers the truth.

Will 'the truth' disappoint Lucy?

4.0 out of 5 stars A riveting read, mon ami.
By Nazarin on 28 January 2021
Five Little Pigs is a thrilling murder mystery by Agatha Christie. I totally enjoyed the book, it was such a gripping one. The plot becomes more and more intense as the story progresses and the timorous statements of suspects will leave us perplexed. Christie won't let us stick to one prime suspect since each person under suspicion has a plausible reason to murder the dead person. The story was utterly misleading till the last chapter and my little grey cells terribly suffered!

Apart from the mystery theme, the book discusses human nature and the problems faced by women at some point. One of the things I found tedious was the multiple accounts of the same incident, that is; the murder of Mr. Crale. It was not at all unimaginative, but I felt a little insipid. Another thing is the uncertainty of justice at the end. Except from this, the book was engrossing and captivating and will keep you thrilled to the very end.
