About the author

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

Agatha Christie is brilliant. She describes same incident through the perspective of 5 different people but not once does it seem repetitive. And the plot twist is amazing, you'll think that you know who the murderer is, but you'll be wrong.
Agatha Christie weaves her novels like a puzzle and Hercule Poirot solves this puzzle piece by piece. The stories are not overly complex like some recent crime thrillers but they are the best.
This book is definitely in my top 5 Agatha Christie books.
Apart from the mystery theme, the book discusses human nature and the problems faced by women at some point. One of the things I found tedious was the multiple accounts of the same incident, that is; the murder of Mr. Crale. It was not at all unimaginative, but I felt a little insipid. Another thing is the uncertainty of justice at the end. Except from this, the book was engrossing and captivating and will keep you thrilled to the very end.

Due to the structure of the story itself, where Poirot reconstructs a cold case, there is one testimony after another for the first 90% of the book. You go through the same situation from different point of view again and again and again! The book gives you every reason to drop it off. The narrative just doesn't move forward at all. You don't know what you are even doing reading this thing and doubt if this is even worth your time.
But my oh my, the payoff delivers.
The final 10% throws at you one truth after another. Every single clue start making sense and you realize that Christie has yet again kept her promise of a brilliant "Poirot whoddunit" at his cerebral finest no less. Never doubt the Queen of Crime.
" A case of murder is a case of murder whether it happened yesterday or sixteen years ago."
Carla receives a letter on her 21st birthday written by her mother ( Caroline Crale) that she is innocent; that she has not committed the murder of her husband ( Amyas Crale) for which she was convicted when Carla was 5 years old. Carla after receiving this letter is desperate to know the truth of the incident that happened sixteen years ago for her sanity. Desperation makes her approach Hercule Poirot. She asks him to unravel the truth of the murder; whatever it may be.
Hercule Poirot takes the case by seeing how determined and desperate Carla is.
While investigating the murder, Poirot comes to realize that the key to the investigation lies in the hands of five people: Philip Blake( Amyas Crale's best friend and now a stockbroker), Meredith Blake ( Philip's Brother), Angela Warren ( Caroline Crale's half-sister), Else Greer ( Amyas Crale's then-lover) and Miss Williams ( Angela's Governess).
But will these five people again want to relive the ordeal that they went through 16 years ago by talking to Poirot? If they do agree, will they remember everything that happened around the day of the murder? the most important question of all; Did Caroline Crale commit the murder or Was the letter just a desperate attempt to seek forgiveness from her daughter? To get the answer to all these questions, the book is to be read. Talking more about the storyline is too risky as I do not like to give spoilers. Also, why is the book named Five Little Pigs is something that you would find humorous while reading the book.
Why should you pick up this book by Christie?
1) Extremely fast-paced. There is no dull moment in the book.
2) Character build-up is very crisp. Each character has a story to tell which will make you keep guessing.
3) Multiple suspect angle.
4) The story will keep you guessing till the very end.
5) Hercule Poirot magic is there. He is in his finest form in the book. ( I know I make this fictional character sound like something real 😜 )
6) The story will satisfy the mystery gene genre in you.

Due to the structure of the book it is quite repetitive, as others have observed. There are clues along the way. Unusually for an Agatha Christie, I pretty much saw the solution to the mystery, although usually I'm flailing in the dark. There are a couple of unlikely events to make the plot work, but that's often par for the course too. This is often rated as one of Christie's better books, but although enjoyable, I'm not convinced.

He has been set the task of resolving a case that happened 16 years ago! The court had supposedly found the murderess, Mrs Caroline Crale, wife of the victim, the well known painter Amyas Crale. But all is not well. You see, they had a daughter, now Miss Carla Lemarchant, who is protesting for her mother's innocence. Poirot must now travel in time to unravel the mysetry of the past…
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, as like the other Christie books, it has a huge plot twister, and just as you suspect someone, another person dors something strange! I couldn't pu this book down, and I hope you like it too!

Back to the book now... In this mystery, Poirot is looking back at a crime from the past. He is employed by a young woman to look into the circumstances of the conviction of her mother for the poisoning of her artist father 16 years previously. The five pigs of the title are the five principals present at the time of the crime (two men and three women). Poirot privately assigns each of them a line from the "This little piggy" nursery rhyme and his work in solving the crime comes from the telling of the event from the POV of each of the five. Christie's writing is really clever and both she and Poirot are at the top of their game as they mesh the five versions of the same story together. At no time did anything feel repetitive as each of character's take on events took centre stage. You know of course that Poirot gets to the truth so your job is to marvel at how he actually pieces it together. Funnily enough for reasons I can't explain when I first read this book I didn't, as I usually do, try to work out which of the suspects was the guilty party I simply "observed" from over Poirot's shoulder so to speak.
It is a clever and worthy addition in the Christie catalogue and one I'm really glad that I revisited. PS it is worth giving the ITV adaptation a look too!
A 5* read.
