5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for kids, families and a great way to celebrate food!

This book brings joy! This book provides smart activities for kids - and really, all readers - to learn about food and how to feel empowered in the kitchen. There are ways for readers to journal and track their lessons and experiences, and to think of food as a great adventure. From learning about the parts of an egg, to making butter, to preserving foods, to understanding the role of sweets - this book makes food fun! While activities are recommended for kids ages 8-12, I'm excited to bring these to my Daisy Girl Scout troop. There are many complementary lessons about nutrition, gardening and science - perfect for any age, especially littles!

My daughter is absolutely in love with this book. From the science facts to the history of different foods and recipes she is hooked! The recipes are very kid friendly and delicious! The author, Amber Stott, is a champion on behalf of making kids more knowledgeable about their food and food choices when it comes to what they eat. With this book she has created a very powerful and fun tool to help in that mission. If you want your child to learn more about their food and how to cook food then this book is a must have. Bon appetite!

This fun, informative book will be going to my 12 and 11 year-old grandchildren soon. The descriptions of the many different foods and food traditions are clear, and the colorful drawings will keep kids (and their parents!) excited and yearning for more. The author is the director of a successful food literacy program that helps kids and adults become self-reliant for food and nutrition. and that helps provide food and education about it to folks in food-challenged communities.

Boost the scientific curiosity, confidence, and adventurous spirit of your child or grandchild with this book. It's a "right-sized" book for its target audience - ages 8 to 12. The history of foods and food preparation tools/methods is blended smoothly with hands-on activities sure to engage youth. The book invites active participation while guiding basic, sound scientific practices. Plenty of fun and tasting opportunities included! Children of many cultural backgrounds will find food history that is relatable.

Fun hands on activities centered around food! I love it! Kids and adults alike will learn and have fun reading and doing the lessons in this book.

This book presents very interesting and unique information about food - where it comes from, cultural history, how it affects your body, and much more. I canโ€™t wait to try the lesson on preserving egg yolks and also the homemade ice cream!

This book is a treasure trove of fun food experiments and a great opportunity for kids to learn during summer break, home school, or as a great supplement if the pandemic teaching is subpar for your child.ย  As a granny with the kids nearby, I'm always looking for ways to keep the kids engaged and entertained; this book hit the mark and will keep us all occupied for months.ย

Beauty in the Binding
4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of information and interesting activities.
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on 5 April 2021
I ordered Food Anatomy by Amber Stott as a possible supplement for our homeschool curriculum. Each of the twenty lessons in Food Anatomy: Activities for Kids offers one or two pages of information about food. Topics include foods that you pick, foods that you farm, foods that you preserve, foods that are sweet, and much more. I read through the lessons, pleased to find the narrative conveyed a good deal of information while remaining engaging.

The next part of the lesson includes a hands-on activity. Some of the activities are simple, but most have a complexity that is best suited for an older child. Many activities can be finished in a 24-hour period, but some take much longer. Most of the activities require planning ahead and purchasing supplies. Unfortunately, there is no master list of supplies needed for the activities. A few examples of the activities: grow a watermelon vine, compare jasmine rice and sticky rice, oven-dried fruit, preserving egg yolks with salt, turning milk into cheese.

The final part of the lesson is to create a farm journal entry. With multiple questions to respond to, this could be considered part of handwriting or creative writing.

Between the need to purchase supplies, the complexity of some activities, the lesson portion, and the journaling, it would likely take us a weekโ€™s worth of homeschool days to complete one lesson. Looking through Food Anatomy: Activities for Kids by Amber Stott, I think it is best suited as a family activity book to do over an extended period such as summer break or a homeschool situation.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this product via the Amazon Vine program. All opinions in this review are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 yr old is excited to try about all of the activities
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on 7 April 2021
My 10 yr old got several different versions of this anatomy workbook series, and this is by far her favorite so far. She already loves to bake and cook, so she immediately went through and marked just about every activity in this book to try. Most of the activities are cooking, but they are more like experiments than recipes, sort of. For example, there's a section on pasta, and the "try it" activity is making spaetzle. She was all in to do this one first. The section on dairy has an activity in which you shake whole milk to make butter and buttermilk. The section on fruit has you make a smoothie by hand three different ways -- one with a mortar and pestle. In each case, you're also given a chart or suggestions for making observations. So it's not strictly a recipe so much as it is a scientific inquiry that produces something you might want to eat. Love the inquiry approach in this book series! There's a section with some new informatin on a topic and then something to try to make your own observations related to the topic. For a kid in your house who likes to cook, this is a great way to learn some science behind cooking without it feeling like a "baking soda volcano" type experiment situation. It's more about cultivating the scientific inquiry mindsight and bringing that to cooking. My 10 yr old is all over this! I can see doing this with much younger kids. Most kids will need some adult assistance to acquire the ingredients. My 10 yr old will be able to do some of the activities independently but others like the spaetzle involve boiling water etc so some adult supervision may be needed depending on kitchen experience and age.
