Review
"Of all the drabble anthologies I have read, this is the absolute best. Every story is unique, thought-provoking, and complete. The authors who write these stories have honed their skills to exacting perfection. Every single word carries tremendous weight to weave an engaging, twisted tale with unexpected endings. You will discover monsters aren't always under-the-bed, imaginary friends can be dangerous, blood sacrifices require blood, contracts for the exchange of souls should be read thoroughly, doppelgangers are unwanted, never trust a skinless man and horse, beware of cucumber-lovers with large appetites..."
"There's something for everyone. Myths and legends get their time in the sun here, such as Greek (Aphrodite A.D.), German (Nidstang), Japanese (Tsukumogami), even the Cthulhu Mythos (The Mountain). Like Ouija Boards? Go that! (Broken Board). How about Holiday Terror? Got you covered! (The Yule Cat). Demonic Conjuring? Yup that's here! (The Summoning)."
"Best book of drabbles I've read so far.
A drabble is a short-story of exactly 100 words. What author's such as K.T. Tate, Mark Anthony Smith, Michelle River and Ximena Escobar accomplish with such restrictions are terrifyingly impressive. From tales of Baba Yaga, Thor, HP Lovecraft inspired madness and Poseidon, this collection boasts an incredible range and depth of story."

He’s an award winning writer (screenplays, plays, books, short stories, and poems). His book “Cool Million” is considered the essential guide to writing high concept movies. Yvonne Glasgow is an author, poet, artist, crafter, healer, Pagan, and nature lover.
Yvonne created her first poetry book ever when she was in the first grade. Since then, she has never stopped writing. However, writing isn't Yvonne's only love. She has a passion for art, mixed-media collage, painting, drawing, crafting, (hand) sewing, music, and more. If it can be considered "creative," it's pretty likely Yvonne loves it. She also has a passion for helping and healing people (mind, body, and soul), which drove her to get her Philosopher of Holistic Life Coaching Degree in 2011 and her Doctor of Divinity in Spiritual Counseling (2018). She's also working toward some wellness certifications right now (2022).
Yvonne Glasgow is a creative genius. She is a professional writer and editor with a passion for all arts. Yvonne started as a professional writer in 2000, writing show reviews and CD reviews (she continues to write music reviews to this day). She was published long before that, with her poems in an anthology here or there and then some in a small zine in the Grand Rapids area that is long gone now (she published those under the pen name IVY).
After a few years of writing reviews for Music Revue Magazine in Grand Rapids, in 2003, Yvonne was hired as their editor-in-chief and would be the final editor-in-chief under the original owner. She remained with the magazine until September of 2005. In the next few years, Yvonne honed her online writing skills, and in 2010 she started working freelance from home full-time.
Before that, in 2008, Yvonne published her first book (in the traditional manner). It was a children's picture book in which she also created all of the art. Frankie the Firefly Belongs would lead to numerous self-published books in multiple genres. Yvonne now focuses on wellness and divination books, poetry, and horror short stories.
When she's not writing, Yvonne can be found doing many other artistic side projects, including crafting witchy and spooky items for Skulls & Cauldrons and doing oracle readings as The Serendipitous Seer.
Runner-up in the Wicked Young Writer Awards: Gregory Maguire Award, Laurence Sullivan's creative writing has appeared in such places as: Londonist, The List, NHK World-Japan, Firewords Magazine and Popshot Quarterly.

In 2023, he completed a PhD in the Medical Humanities at Northumbria University, exploring literary portrayals of women's domestic medicine during the eighteenth century. When not writing, he can probably be found playing video games whilst quaffing copious quantities of tea.

I love words. I always have. I remember being five years old at Christmas and my parents gave me a crazy set of "Children's Classics." Black Beauty, Water Babies, The Man in the Iron Mask. I couldn't read any of them, but the potential was heady. By 8th grade, I knew I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. I had landed in honour's english class, which was all about words. I learned about Shakespeare and wrote my own Greek myth. And I never looked back.
If you let me, I'll share that love with you, in ways you may not have explored before. We'll go on journeys into dark, forbidden places. We'll sigh and smile and turn the page and hold our breaths. I promise to bring you safely home.
LP Hernandez has been writing stories since he could hold a pen. Although he loves many genres, he is drawn to the dark and unknown. His work has been adapted by the NoSleep Podcast many times, and has been featured in anthologies such as A Monster Told Me Bedtime Stories, If I Die Before I Wake vol 5, A Pile of Bodies A Pile of Heads vol 2, and Lockdown Horror vol 1 among others. A revised and expanded edition of his first collection, Dreadful: Tales of the Dead and Dying will be released by Velox Books. His second collection, The Rat King, is fully illustrated and will be released in partnership with The NoSleep Podcast's Sleepless Sanctuary Publishing.
A Splatterpunk-Nominated Author, Steve Stred lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with his wife, son and their staffy, Cocoa. I was born in Hull and I've loved books from an early age. I read English at The University of Hull before graduating in Social Sciences with The Open University. I'm really pleased that Hull won the U.K. City of Culture 2017 as I saw what it did for Liverpool.
I never thought I'd write poetry. But I was drawn to a book on Haiku in 2014. I started working with this form towards the end of that year. I had 'Hearts of the matter' commended in a National Magazine. Some of my other poems appear in a 2016 International anthology with all proceeds to Rescue animals.
In 2018, I've contributed to the album 'Safe and warm' by 'Musicians for homeless' with a monologue kindly read by the actor Ian Ralph. Please support those less fortunate.
WINNER: November 2019 - 'The Hermit' - Blue Animal Literature @BlueLiterature .
Poetry can be just as weighty as a novel. It's condensed but not watered down. I'm currently working on fiction projects. Short stories and poems have appeared in The Horror Tree: Trembling With Fear, Penumbric Speculative Fiction Magazine, Aphotic Realm, Rune Bear, Detritus, Fiction Kitchen Berlin, The Cabinet of Heed, Nymphs, Spelk, Eerie River, Dodging The Rain, InkPantry, Red Cape Publishing and more.
I hope you enjoy reading the fictions and poems as much as I did shaping them.

Born in the usual way, I started roleplaying Dungeons and Dragons at the age of 8. I stopped playing it for awhile but soon plunged back into this world of fantasy and magic once more. I discovered a world of imagination and loved the myriad of possibilities that it offered. For years I designed worlds and cities, even races, and just as quickly I brought them tumbling down in ruin. I could create pantheons of Gods, and heroes to battle against their evil plots. I also started reading avidly, thanks to a teacher in high school, and this opened up more worlds for me to peruse and dissect for my own purposes. For the last 30+ years I have been coming up with whole functioning societies......but what was next?
Well I was already writing short bio's for characters in our game, and elaborate back stories for interesting people that we would interact with, so how was that very different than writing a book? So in 2011 I started putting my brain to use on developing a new world, except this time I would have to fill in everything. Lythinall was born. I published The Darkness Returns (A Lythinall Novel) Book 1 in June 2017, and The Darkness Within (A Lythinall Novel) Book 2 in 2018. Then it happened. A publisher read my story and wanted me. In 2018 I was signed by Kyanite Publishing! i put out a lot of short stories with them but sadly they closed their doors in 2019...but Skullgate Media wanted to sign me! My complete trilogy is now out as well as an anthology of tales all based in Lythinall. Other than all of this I still play the game that started it all, and I still design places, people and items when I'm not hanging out with my family or working my ass off at my day job

Alanna Robertson-Webb is a rising star among short story writers, and one of the anthologies she is featured in (Monsters, by Black Hare Press) has been nominated for a 2019 Bram Stoker Award. Additionally, the novella she co-wrote (Storming Area 51: Horror at the Gates) reached the #1 spot in Amazon's sci-fi books in October of 2019.
Her stories are often infused with hair-raising horror, and her paranormal tales in particular add just the right amount of darkness to keep her readers intrigued.
For Alanna the spooky side of writing is a riviting journey through the human psyche, so whether you are looking for some of her wholesome horror (Monstronomicon by Haunted House Publishing) or wish to be transported into one of her grimmer worlds (Death and Butterflies by Suicide House Publishing) then grab a book and embark on a thrilling read!
Patricia Elliott lives in Beautiful British Columbia with her husband of 20 years and their children. Now that their lovely kids are all teenagers, she has decided to actively pursue her passion for the written word.
When she was a youngster, she spent the majority of her time writing fanfiction and poetry to avoid the harsh reality of bullying. Writing allowed her to escape into another world, even if temporarily; a world in which she could be anyone or anything, even a mermaid.
Dreams really can come true. If you believe it, you can achieve it!

Ximena is an emerging Author of short stories and poetry.
Originally from Chile, she is the author of a translation into Spanish of the Broadway Musical "The Wizard of OZ" (2011), and of an original adaptation of the same, "Navidad en OZ" (2018). Having started a family in the UK 2005, it took her a while to feel confident enough to write in English, despite speaking it since childhood. In the meantime, she ran her own business teaching extra-curricular Spanish in primary schools, and telling "traditional stories with a twist", in schools and festivals, with "Pie in the Sky Storytellers". Though her degree in Communication Science set her aspirations on writing for the screen, she has, since resuming writing in 2018, devoted her time to poetry, short stories and micro fiction. Whilst her first novel waits to be written, she is enjoying every minute of this exploration through different literary genres.

Greetings, from one who lives where feline eyes glitter in dark places between monstrous red trees, where occult apes lurk with unseen tread and unclean purpose, where sacrifices to forgotten devils lie drowned, profaned, forgotten in Stygian waters.
Do you like me pine for steaming jungles within the island kingdom of the imagination, where beats the heart of savage drums, and there live philosophic yet murderous crustaceans, shattered robots, buried sacrifices to forgotten devils, and dark countries yet unfounded?
If so then hail and well met, fellow traveler!

There are two types of people in this world: Those who are afraid of things that can happen and those who fear the impossible. Regina Kenney is the latter having spent her life checking in spaces too small for humans and wondering whether that doll in the corner just blinked.
Originally from Minnesota, Regina brought her irrational fears to the empty alleys of Chicago, the foggy streets of London and to the dank and dark pubs in her new home, Dublin. Her first horror story was published in the 2019 Hamthology collection and her stories have been accepted to nine more horror anthologies to be published in 2020.
Joe Scipione lives in the suburbs of Chicago with his wife and two kids. He is the author of Mr. Nightmare, Decay, Zoo: Eight Tales of Animal Horror and Perhaps She Will Die. More than anything, I am a lover of stories. To tell them, to be told, to listen to, to watch, to play, to read, to write, there are so many ways for stories to be conveyed and I have yet to find a medium I don't enjoy. Stories are a huge part of my life, and being a nerd has exposed me to some of the best. Whether it's Asimov, King, Bradbury, Jacques, Tolkien, Crichton, Adams, Abnett, Ross, or any of the other uncountable storytellers I've been so lucky to witness, I am inspired and awed by those who have come before me.
I live in southern Iowa with my wife, our two dogs, and a herd of four cats.

I live in southern New Hampshire with my family, where I teach high school full time while writing. I've long had an interest in fantasy and science fiction, with The Hobbit and Star Wars being formative movies for me as a child and serving as a gateway to numerous franchises and books across both genres. Horror came later as I came to know the Aliens franchise and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (with the original artwork!), and I've been writing here and there for most of my life, all of which served as excellent practice.

Al-Hazred is a young independent horror author. His love story with the genre goes back to his days lurking the basement of the only bookshop in town providing books in his native language. While there, he came across the likes of Algernon Blackwood, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer or Carlos Ruiz Zafón. This inspired him to get involved with the horror fiction community. To the date, this has successfully landed his work in anthologies such as Horror d’oeuvres (volumes II and III), the Monstronomicon, Scary Snippet’s Christmas special and Forgotten Ones: Drabbles of Myth and Legend.

Bin sehr enttäuscht, das war mit beim Kauf nicht klar, dass ich nur "Zusammenfassungen" von Geschichten bekomme. Schade. :-(

Somewhere on Facebook (probably), I found a link to the Eerie River Publishing anthology "Forgotten Ones: Drabbles of Myth and Legend." Although I’ve written a drabble or two in my time, and have had them published in various anthologies, I’ve never read a drabble anthology cover to cover.
I guess the concept never really appealed to me (ducks as objects by drabble authors are thrown at my head).
And that was how I started reading “Forgotten Ones.” I quickly picked up on each author’s source material in mythology and theology, but they just didn’t seem to float my boat. At heart, I’m a short story to novella writer. I thrive on character development, painting a scene with broad strokes, and then highlighting it with subtle pens and pencils. A 100-word drabble just doesn’t allow for that.
Then I remembered my dim past when I used to read poetry. This was a long, long time ago, and I’ve lost the touch for appreciating a poem.
However, when I encountered an actual 100-word poem in the anthology, as opposed to a narrative, all that changed. I shifted my perspective, and considered that even haiku, which I wrote in High School (when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), could relate meaning and evoke thought and emotion with just a tiny handful of words.
So I continued reading, and yes, enjoying these drabbles. There are a lot of them representing a large group of writers.
Actually, the drabble content comprises a little more than 80% of the ebook, which I found disappointing, just as I was “getting into” reading drabbles. However, each author was allowed a paragraph or two at the end of the book to describe themselves and post links.
What I found (finally) enjoyable, was the ability to stick just a toe into so many, many different mythological expressions, picking out the various gems. There were too many to narrow down to favorites.
What I would have changed if I had been the publisher, is that for each bio at the end of the book, I would have linked back to the story or stories that author had (metaphorically) penned, so I could make connections. A link from a story to the bio would also have been helpful. That way, should I decide on a few favorites, I could further explore those favored writers and their other works.
Another advantage is that, even with a page count of 271 (if it were a hardcopy book), drabbles can be incredibly fast reads. So if you want something to engage with, but you don’t have a huge amount of time (or are interrupted frequently), it’s the perfect medium.
Keep that in mind when you’re looking for something to read.
Oh, and I absolutely love fiction based on mythology and theology, so this collection was right up my proverbial alley.
