Attention seeking book

Overall a great book, was able to catch my attention for a very long time. This is one of the books that got me into the dystopian genre, and i still think it is one of the best books about dystopia. I highly recommend this book to everyone. The have also made a film about the giver however the film lacks in detail and differs from the original story line, hence i greatly prefer the book. The giver has 3 sequels ; Gathering blue, Messenger and son. All good books however you need to have patience as their stories only connect at the end. Overall amazing!

Recently I had been finding myself overtly critical and apathetic of reading fiction books. In most books I had to force myself to finish them because I spent money on them. But this one created the kind of experience I want from reading a book. I forgot myself. I started weaving the story in front of my eyes as the words progressed. There is a kind of sinister mystery about the setting of the book though it has all wonderful human beings who all are working for the betterment of the society they have built. The book is great for children and adults alike. Me personally being a 30 year old enjoyed it fully and it definitely was a page turner for me. Should be part of school curriculums.

I liked it. Its a beautiful book with very beautiful and important concept. This is a must read book for children above 6th grade.

But you will be little disappointed with characters. While reading the story, I felt no connection between Jonas and his family. May be its due to their community in which they are living and their lack of feelings but there were no emotions. The protagonist, Jonas, is just 12 but he was very matured and working for the greater good(this little thing which might bug you because of his age, it did to me because I was more like Lily, no idea what I was doing but definitely not saving the world). I was disappointed with other characters such as Asher and Fiona because while reading, you will get an impression that they are going to be an important part but sadly, they were cut out of the story. I had already build up some story between Fiona and Jonas in my mind but was disappointed in the end.

Now, about the story, beginning of the story felt like Utopia and not the opposite, but later author subtly introduces to the reader that how s***ty their world is and how lucky you can be with not having Sameness. I shudder to think a world without colors and music, same monotonous life without any surprises. It will be a very horrible place.
Story carries a very important message but it could have been much better with little bit of more emotions and more connection between characters.

Its ending is ambiguous and will keep you hanging in the middle. You have to make peace with your mind by deciding whether its a happy or sad ending.

Overall, a great book to read and its worth your time. Hence, definitely recommended.

I wasn't really willing to buy this book but I had to because of this book reading thing our school came up with recently. I didn't bother to read this book for the first few days to be honest and when I did start reading,I got pretty bored. But when you reach the 6th chapter, well, that's when everything changes. You will start releating, you will start understanding this world. You would feel completely into the novel as i did. I don't know but for some reason it broke my heart reading this . Maybe because I started to understand this world. I had no hopes from this novel but now it seems that it didn't let me down afterall. Trust me guys this book is a 100 percent must for all the guys out there searching for a book to start of with their reading journey. The language of the writer is quite simple yet very convencing.it left me speechless, uterly speechless.

Just recently bought this book and it is really good. Thought many people didn't like the ending, i think otherwise. But, the only thing is that i wasn't aware that The Giver is a part of a quartet, so if you want to buy this. Make sure to go for the whole series. After-all, reading just one book from a series is a life lived unfinished.

I was looking through a listicle of books that are, according to the author, “Must-Reads”, when I stumbled across this one. Most of the books on the list were ones that I had already read, barring one or two, and among those was “The Giver”. I had heard of the book before, but I was recovering from another one of my infamous reading slumps that always seem to happen mid-vacation, and desperate to read anything. So I went and got the Kindle Sample of the book. I got so immersed that I ended up reading it well into the night.

If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you would have seen the excited rant that I went into in the middle of the night about the concept of memory explored in the book.

The book is set in an indeterminate future where human beings are engineered and brought into this world through Birth Mothers. Every batch of children has about 50 individuals and twins are not allowed. People are given their Assignments at thhe age of 12 and are then coached accordingly.

Jonas has grown up in this society, that is believed to be the perfect world. But at 12, he is given the Assignment of Receiver. He is to be given the memories of the world.

What I found reading the book is that the concept of Memory as expressed in this book, is the concept of History. It is the memories of the past. A past before the Sameness, when there existed colour and feelings and emotions.

Memories, if understood well, give Wisdom – a quality thought to be essential in Life. And so Jonas gains Wisdom. He starts to see individuality. He starts to see the importance of difference. He sees the importance of emotions and feelings – love, hate, grief, lust. He sees that these make up life and that without these one cannot say that they have truly experienced Life.

In essence, I believe, this book tells us the importance of the so-called material things that make Life what it is, and gives the individuality to each life and the differences in between.

Human beings search for Happiness. Ironically, in the absence of Grief, Happiness cannot be felt, as it would not be a distinguishable emotion.

This book revolves around a boy naned jonas, who lives in a society where everything is perfect. There is no danger, no pain.. but people there, they have no memories, no feelings and they lead their life that way..
This is not another book which upon finishing u say "wow! A good read!!" The giver makes u think, it makes u speechless once uve finished it.
And that's all I can say about the book, I'll be watching the movie soon and all I can do is hope that the movie's as good as the book :)
