About the Author
Hubert Joly is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Best Buy Co., Inc. where he led the company's turnaround and transformed it into an industry leader, consistently rated one of the best places to work for. He is now a senior lecturer at the Harvard Business School.
He is also a member of the board of directors of Johnson & Johnson and Ralph Lauren Corporation, and a vice chairman of the Business Council. He has endowed the Joly Family chair in Purposeful Leadership at HEC Paris where he actively collaborates with the faculty.
Prior to Best Buy, he was the CEO of Carlson Companies, a global leader in the hospitality and travel industry, a senior executive at Vivendi S.A., the president of EDS France and a partner at McKinsey & Company. He is a graduate of HEC Paris and Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris.
Hubert has been recognized as one of the top 100 CEOs in the world by Harvard Business Review, one of the top 30 CEOs in the world by Barron's, and one of the top 10 CEOs in the US by Glassdoor. He is a knight in the French Legion of Honor and the French National Order or Merit.
Writer Caroline Lambert has collaborated on books with a wide range of change makers and thought leaders, including the former President of Malawi, anti-corruption crusaders, and entrepreneurs and government officials. Most recently, she cowrote the bestseller Aligned with Hortense le Gentil.
As a journalist and Deputy Asia Editor for The Economist, Caroline wrote about business, economics, and politics, earning the Diageo Africa Business Reporting Award and the Sanlam Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism. Caroline holds an MBA from INSEAD and an MA in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, where she was awarded the Groove Haines Award in International Policy. About the authors
Hubert Joly is the former Chairman and CEO of Best Buy. He has been recognized as one of the one hundred “Best-Performing CEOs in the World” by Harvard Business Review, one of the top thirty CEOs in the world by Barron’s, and one of the top ten CEOs in the United States in Glassdoor’s annual Employees’ Choice Awards. Joly is now a senior lecturer at Harvard Business School and serves on the boards of Johnson & Johnson and Ralph Lauren.

Caroline Lambert is an award-winning former journalist who works as a writing collaborator, ghostwriter and coach, helping people share their ideas and stories.
During her eight years as a staff writer and Deputy Asia Editor for The Economist, Caroline wrote about business, economics and politics in various parts of the world. She won the Diageo Africa Business Reporting Award and the Sanlam Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism for her coverage of Africa from Johannesburg. Her other assignments included covering post-conflict situations—and at times not so “post”—reporting from Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Zimbabwe and Algeria, among others.
Caroline Lambert holds an M.B.A from INSEAD and an M.A. in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). On the other hand, the small minority who find work meaningful, enjoyable and a way of finding meaning to a purposeful life, excel, enjoy, and energise the workplace. The book is about finding the difference.
Stakeholder capitalism that goes beyond the narrow concept of shareholder wealth maximization, is at the core of this book. The book is based on Hubert Joly’s personal experience in turning around Best Buy from Bankruptcy to stakeholder prosperity.
There are two excellent frameworks in this book. Consider 4 aspects of an individual. 1. Doing what you love. 2. What you are good at. 3. What you can be paid for. 4. What the world needs. The illustration on page 30 depicts these four aspects in intersecting circles (like high school set theory on intersection of sets). 1 and 2 create PASSION at work. 2 and 3 create a valuable PROFESSION. 3 and 4 create a meaningful VOCATION. 4 and 1 create a MISSION. The magic lies in the small space where 1,2,3, 4 intersect; the true noble PURPOSE that we strive to live for, and the core of all that we do. This clearly illustrates the need to align an organization’s PURPOSE with that of an individual.
This brings us to the next interesting framework on page 66. ‘The Purposeful Human Organization- a declaration of interdependence’. The noble PURPOSE for which the organization exists acts as the guiding star for engaged employees who create Delighted Customers, Vendors as Partners, Thriving Communities AND Rewarded Shareholders. The stress is on AND. Forget the myopic traditional view of enhancing shareholder value at the expense of the rest.
While considering new business ideas, Best Buy uses four questions:
• Does it fit with our purpose as a company?
• Is it good for the customer?
• Can we deliver?
• And can we make money?
Profit is an outcome, and not an imperative. This architecture energizes each individual and unleashes human magic leading to ‘irrational performance’. I am reminded of Peter F. Drucker Quote: “The purpose of an organization is to enable ordinary human beings to do extraordinary things.”
In the twenty first century when automation has replaced monotonous and repetitive tasks, we have a great opportunity to enrich people’s lives through meaning, purpose, love, creativity, and passion. Words that were unknown in the industrial age. Welcome to the conceptual age.

It is more than WHY, it talks about finding true meaning of pursuing an act, ideally for collective & common good with people at the center. Purposeful Organisation is a guidephrase for anyone in a quest for achieving big with people and for people.
Narrates and educates to go from 70s management philosophy of "Business is to increase shareholders' wealth" to "Business is to enrich every stakeholders' life".
