A Conversation with Ajay K Pandey
Ajay debuted as an author with his book you are the Best Wife. It was a heart-touching love story based on his life events and lessons. Ready with his second book, Ajay tells us what inspired him to write another love story - Her Last Wish.
Q: Tell us about your upcoming book Her Last Wish.
A. Ajay K Pandey: The title speaks for itself, but only one aspect of the love story that Her Last Wish is. It’s essentially a story of a young couple deeply in love. They have their share of everyday struggles, but the love keeps them going strong. Until one day, when Vijay gets to know that his wife Astha is HIV positive. It’s a sudden revelation, and he doesn’t know what to do. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know about the infection either. Instead of judging her and pointing a finger at her, he decides to do something that only someone crazily in love can do.
Q: Why did you choose to write a love story around an AIDS patient?
A. Ajay K Pandey: I used to visit hospitals quite frequently when my wife Bhavna was unwell. There, I met a woman who was taking therapy for depression, and was HIV positive. I had a chat with her; we still talk about things. What she was going through couldn’t be expressed in words. It’s not just about your own body, but the social stigma that people make it out to be. This mindset had to be changed! So, I decided to write and dedicate the book to her.
Q: What gives you the inspiration to write?
A. Ajay K Pandey: Life does. And the lack of life-moments for some others perhaps. I was jolted when my wife Bhavna passed away, but also realized how important every living moment is. And then looking at someone who is living, and is treated like a dead person walking by the society is painful. I want to write, not just for pleasure, but for spreading love too.
Q. How is Her Last Wish different from your first book?
A. Ajay K Pandey: Honestly, my first book was not a book; it was my own journey with my wife. The second book is my attempt at writing fiction based on true events. Most people are not aware about AIDS or HIV. They mostly assume things and judge those who are infected. In my research, I found out that most HIV positive patients are depressed. They cannot share their bearings. They are fighting their war of depression and pain every day, and without any support from us. It’s a unique book that forces us to open our eyes to the truth and teach us how love can change a person’s life completely.
Q: We heard that you were depressed after your wife’s demise. How did you cope up with that?
A. Ajay K Pandey: When I lost my wife, my mind was occupied with two feelings: misery and anger. Initially I thought I was suffering the most in this world. But when I looked around, I realized that there are way too many people who are fighting for their survival. Everyone was fighting their own battle. This realization helped me recuperate and appreciate life.
Depression is the result of loneliness. If you do not have friends, start writing a dairy. Once you will start counting your blessings, you will realize what you have lost is very little in comparison to what life has given you. Avoid staying in the dark. Face people. Be with friends. Choose a friend with whom you can share your feelings. When I started writing a diary, it was like I was talking with my wife. Even if you cannot write, talk to your own self. I may sound weird to you on this, but I stood in front of a mirror and talked. I shouted at the person in the mirror and asked questions. You have to let it go.
And you have to learn to forgive yourself. We are human beings. We are bound to make mistakes. Your life is not only your life.

I am a very busy women who is always busy with office, home, kids, Just casually started reading this book while eating my food, but I don't have heart to put it down, I continued reading it during one hour of travel to my office ( having kindle app in mobile helped me) , become busy in office, even then my mind wanted to read it, somehow controlled my mind and involved in office work, then again while having lunch, continued to read the story, again while returning to home, while preparing dosa for everyone in home for dinner, all the time I had mobile in hand reading this book.
I loved the theme of the story very much. I don't want to compare his writing style with anyone else, each one is unique in their own way. He seems to be a very casual writer and he used very simple common english words, so even those who are having average English knowledge can enjoy this story.
HIV and AIDS are different!!!!! I astonished to read this information. My brother and his wife are doctors, but I don't know this information. So I enquired with them and they confirmed that it is true. Important informations won't reach the public when it is conveyed just as an information. So he beautifully incorporated informations about HIV, he cleared common man's basic doubts about HIV and AIDS, how we should treat HIV infected persons, everything clearly explained.
I am great fan of romantic novels, especially tamil romantic novels by few women authors, in those novels always hero used to be portrayed so high, very confident, rich etc etc., so introduction of hero in this story as an average man, who faced failures in his life boggled me. But this is the truth, author made us understand that a hero need not be like someone whom we see in movies or in romantic novels, but an ordinary man who loves his girl so much and who is ready to anything for her.
So after reading this novel, I found out the answer for the question in my mind, why he is having more women fans and why my friend is very much craze over his writing!!!! I think it is due to the characterisation of hero, his wife's blood result showed HIV positive and his result is HIV negative, but even then he didn't doubt her, so his faith over his wife even in that situation, raised him to a great hero, every woman wants a hero like him in her life, faith is the basement for any strong relationship.
So now I planned to read author's first novel, I hope that I will like it too.
The struggle of patients who have HIV is real. Since majority of population still doesn't understand the disease, they treat the victim as an untouchable.
I commend the author on picking up such an important social issue and presenting it in an entertaining way.
The book is not a 'preacher', it's an emotional one.
Since it's written from Vijay's POV, whose wife gets HIV and is dying, this also makes it sort of a love story.
I liked all the things he did for her because that made him not only a good husband but also a better man. It made him overcome the feeling of disappointment that he had caused his parents during his life.
Moreover the writing style is wonderful and it made me feel connected with the story.
There was one thing that I didn't like and that was the interruption of flow.
The story would be going at a steady pace with all its twists and turns but sudden change in POV, and certain unnecessary paragraphs of motivational writing just made me dislike the book a little bit.
Overall it was an interesting read and informative as well.
The protagonist of the story, an average looking 30 year old Vijay, after having struggled to clear UPSC exams for 5 years finally lands up a job in a college as an Assistant Professor courtesy his mother. Growing up amidst a IPS officer father and a famous newspaper's journalist Mother, Vijay had always been an introvert and abiding by his parents. After spending years of making him try his luck for government jobs, his parents finally wants him to get matrimonial harmony. Being an under achiever Vijay faces hard luck in trying to find an alliance, until the fourteenth one surprisingly accepts the proposal.
Astha, a beautiful modern girl with a secured bank job ends up marrying Vijay, an association Vijay reflected as 'Winner weds Loser'.
Little did Vijay knew how in couple of months his loser status would change and he would turn out as a winner inspite of loosing the one he loves.

I personally enjoyed reading the book. It was fast paced and kept me glued to the story. The insertion of narration from important characters of the story in between was an add on to the first person narrative. Although the seven wishes were rather dramatic I enjoyed how later they all connected well into the story.
Overall a good read !
