Do I really have to review the Hunger Games? Come on. It's one of the best series out there, if not the best! I had read the HG series on paperbacks. But, I fell in love with it and I knew I had to get the hardcovers.
Coming to the quality of the books. The covers are beautiful! The dust jacket has those texture on the titles and on the mockingjay bird. The mockingjay is engraved on the actual cover, which adds to the aesthetic of the book. The pages are good and the binding is really strong. If you want to collect, you got to get this one. This one should be on every book enthusiast's shelf.
P.S. The best part, this is the FIRST EDITION. Yes! This is the first one!

I bought this set for my son. He started reading many days after I received the books. When he began reading the second book in the series, we realized that the pages are all misplaced. After page number 26, there is page number 49, after 58 there is 47. Pages between 26 to 47 and nowhere found in the book. I can't return the books because the time limit for returning is over. Complete waste of money. Never expected this from Scholastic. I bought these books because they are published by Scholastic.

This book is a must read for the fans of divergent and maze runner.....it focuses on totalitarian dictatorship, a facet that that was prevalent in the past few centuries. It will definitely not fail to instil a deep impression on the minds of the readers and leave them wondering about the dystopia which we are living in.

Haven't found any binding issues or pen marks so I am happy there, even though I expected a bit more from Amazon's description of "Used - Like New".
There was no box but that's fine as it was mentioned beforehand.

The book covers of one of the trilogy (Hunger Games #1) was different from what was promised in pictures (and I am someone who thinks highly of their aesthetic values).

The first book seems to be of a lower quality print! The paper and the print quality are abysmal! It looks like they changed out the first book to a cheap one to cut costs. Also, the box in which it was put was a flimsy paper one.

The Books
I loved the books and actually finished them all within a week just because I couldn't stop reading. Everyone must read it once in their lives but once is not enough. Hats off to Suzanne Collins. I have recommended the books to my friends and not one of them took longer than a week.
The Packaging
I was a bit taken back by the satisfactory packaging. But, they were still in a condition to be read although they box was completely destroyed. I wonder how it made it to my place.

Good quality books and case thingy.
I watched the films (on release) and, initially, enjoyed them. Then read these books and watched the films again. The books are much better than the films. The films are actually quite poor in comparison.
The story is, in general, quite good. Katniss gets a bit annoying towards the end because she never seems to grow out of her 'whiny teen' stage despite all the things she goes through, you'd think she'd grow up a bit but nevermind.
The prequel story/film should be interesting...

I cannot remember exactly who first drew my attention to "the Hunger Games".... some friend I think it may be when the first film came out??... anyway, I poo-pah-ed it.... based on no more than it "seeming" to be some teen-flick romance type film...probably not my "cup-of-tea"
... and then i watched the film for the first time a week ago.... and was blown away!.... Im not even sure exactly why?... so, encouraged, I watched Catching Fire.... now Im fully gripped, drawn in and cannot wait to see the next installment.
...and now to the book.... do I need to read it??.... well, I "kindled" the trilogy and have just finished reading the first book...oh wow, what a truly brilliant story (despite having watched the film(s).... I have never read a story that has been written fully from the perspective of the lead character...its quite intriguing, its riveting, its extrodinarily beautiful.... I love it.
All I am really trying to say here that MAY be useful to anyone is regardless of watching films, do try to read the books...ok, I havnt hit the last two books yet but somehow... i know.. I wont be disappointed.
"May the odds be forever in your favour....." >:)

A very human dystopia with a satisfying and realistic ending
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2017Verified Purchase
I really surprised myself by enjoying this so much. Dystopias aren't my thing, usually, but this felt so well put together. Oddly, it made me want to go and read about the Cold War when I finished, because I have a feeling thats what the Panem/13 feud is based off. The final book of the triology is so much better than the films. And there's so much humanity and tiny points in the horror where you can laugh at the little details of how ridiculous people can be - a stylist in the middle of a warzone weeping over a skirt because "its been so long since I last saw something pretty."

Better, by far, than Harry Potter
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2013Verified Purchase
As a woman "of a certain age" I know that this book is not aimed at me as the target audience, but what a read! Set in a post apocalyptic America where 12 districts are ruled by "the Capitol"which, as punishment for a long ago rebellion, demands 2 children from each district every year as "tribute" to fight to the death in gladiatorial combat. We follow the events through the eyes of one such "tribute" but this novel is not just about fighting or survival, it is about love & loss & subversion & rebellion & everything else in between.
It is impossible to discuss the plot without spoiling it for those yet to read this trilogy however I was caught up in the story & found it truly emotional. Comparisons with "Lord of the Flies" are inevitable &, although it is years since I read it , I can see similarities. However I also see the influence of other writers & of others concepts & mythologies. Again it is impossible to discuss the complexities of the themes without ruining the plot for others. But do not be put off by my use of the word "complexities"; these 3 books are not a difficult read & will keep your interest all the way to the end. Read it simply as a novel, or set of novels, & you will not be disappointed but I would have loved to have these books as set reading for analysis in a literature class; they would stand up remarkably well.
As I said, I know that I am not the target demographic for these novels but, like the Harry Potter novels, they are likely to transcend the generations. I read all the Potter novels & found them entertaining enough, if a little dull at times & taking an awfully long time to get to the inevitable conclusion. These novels are never dull & the conclusion is anything but inevitable. They should make the reader think far more than a Harry Potter novel & are all the better for that.

Gripping but uneven
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 November 2013Verified Purchase
I would have loved this as a teenager (probably around 11-14) and enjoyed it now as a gripping read, but also found it, in parts, frustratingly simplistic. There's no need to re-cap the story, and Collins does a great imaginative job of creating the Games from a mix of Greek myth, Roman history, and modern reality TV. I liked Katniss, too, and enjoyed her sometimes barbed comments and behaviour.
But for all the good stuff - and there are some great ideas at work here - there's also an overwhelming dependency on genre cliches (the obligatory teen love triangle <groan>). Characterisation is a bit hit-and-miss, and things happen that I was never quite able to believe in.
So, overall, there's enough good stuff here, especially in the first book, to just tip this over into the 4-star category for me. But it doesn't have the more subtle imagination, detailed writing, maturer politics and deeper characterisation that is making Veronica Roth's Divergent Trilogy such a thrilling current read for me. Recommended as an exciting though easy read.
