Product description

Review

"I am grateful to Alamelu for creating one of the first gluten-free Indian cookbooks, allowing those of us who avoid gluten to delve into the cuisine of South India. Whether or not you avoid gluten, you will find the recipes in this book to be delicious and nutritious, just as food should be." --Kristen H. Reynolds, M.D.

"Rich and vibrant in flavor and color, these dishes shout out to be translated from page to plate. The recipes are clear, concise and easy to follow, loaded with nurturing ingredients and seasoned with the most healthful spices. In addition to being gluten-free, these dishes avoid most dairy, sugar and red meat, thus promoting health and well-being for all. Another valuable resource for all people living with and beyond cancer, already added to my recommended reading list!" --Donald I. Abrams, M.D., Integrative Oncology University of California San Francisco Osher Center for Integrative Medicine

"Alamelu's healthy style of cooking is a harmonious blend of flavors and freshness that makes the journey into the world of gluten-free Indian cooking approachable and exciting for everyone!" --Jason Gorman, Executive Chef The Art Institute of Chicago

"The recipes incorporate spices and bold flavors (but in quantities geared to American taste buds) resulting in lively satisfying dishes. You could easily put together a whole Indian meal from this book, or just pick one of the vegetable recipes as a spicy, out-of the-ordinary accompaniment to your usual dinner fare." --Edible Phoenix, Fall 2013

Alamelu Vairavan is an enthusiastic advocate for preparing foods that are both tasty and healthy using spices and legumes.

Alamelu has published several cookbooks that have helped even novice cooks discover easy ways to prepare healthful foods with Indian flavors. If you think children have to be persuaded or tricked into eating more vegetables, try Alamleu's recipes. You may be in for a surprise! She believes even vegetable haters can be transformed to vegetable lovers with subtle enhancements using spices and legumes.

Alamelu's popular cooking TV shows titled, "Healthful Indian Flavors With Alamelu," produced by Milwaukee PBS, has been aired on Public Television in Wisconsin and in many parts of the United States on PBS CREATE since 2010. (Episodes can be seen via YouTube.com). Alamelu's book titled, "Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu" (Hippocrene Books, NY, Nov. 2016) includes most and the best of the recipes featured in her PBS TV series. Her most recent book, "Vegetarian Recipes with Alamelu" (Hippocrene Books, NY, Nov. 2020) features Alamelu's best vegetarian recipes from her TV shows, her previous books and many new recipes.

In her cookbooks and TV shows, Alamelu emphasizes easy to prepare, aromatic and flavorful foods. The Los Angeles Times, for example, has referred to her recipes as, "coconut-infused curries, brilliant vegetable dishes", and has noted "what could be complex becomes relatively simple in Vairavan's approach."

In 2009, Alamelu presented a sold-out workshop, titled, "Enticing Indian Flavors" at the James Beard Foundation, in New York for which she received recognition of "outstanding contribution". Alamelu has also been featured as a celebrity chef at the Annual Kohler Food & Wine event in Kohler, Wisconsin and in Dine and Wine Wisconsin events in Milwaukee. She has also made culinary presentations in Scottsdale, AZ and in Chicago, Ill.

Alamelu has offered wellness and team-building programs to many corporations. She has trained chefs to offer healthful options in restaurants and in company cafeterias. She also makes time for numerous community programs in schools, libraries, hospital outreach programs and in community centers, and for fundraising events.

Besides authoring several books, Alamelu has also contributed recipes to the book, "Healing Spices" by Dr. Bharat Aggarwal (a cancer research scientist formerly at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Care Center) that was published in 2011. Her contributions have also been featured in "Cooking Healthy Across America", an American Dietetic Association cookbook (John Wiley, 2005).

Alamelu can be contacted through her website: www.curryonwheels.com. Her Facebook page is titled, "Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu" where she posts regular food blogs.
