4.0 out of 5 stars Good upgrade from previous 4k firestick, but still there are few things to improve
By sreekanth mamidi on 11 October 2021
I have used previous generation firetv 4k and its not up to mark so I have returned it and was eagerly waiting for upgrade as firetv cube is expensive.

Here are the problems I faced using older version of firestick 4k.

    1) it hardly played 4k, most of the times it defaults to full HD. I tested in Amazon prime, netflix etc.
    2) no dolby atmos output in netflix, prime video.

    With new 4k max.
    1) Happy to see ultra HD (4k) finally from fire stick.
    2) Tested uhd content from prime video, netflix and apple tv and all of them working as expected.
    3) Dolby atmos output from prime video and netflix are working finally.
    4) Alexa integration is awesome. I have echo device and it works seamless with echo device.
    5) Not sure how amazon does is but the moment I connected my firetv stick, it automatically connected to my wifi network, amazon account and no need to spend time on wifi setup, amazon login and alexa integration.

    Few things still need improvement
    1) Issue I observed even with old generation is that output from fire stick is not bright, it looks bit dull especially when you see same content from lg tvs app vs app from fire tv. When I tested in old Sony tv and change few settings output looks good though.
    2) No dolby atmos from Apple tv app through fire stick. Same content when watched through lg tv -> apple tv app, I got dobly atmos audio output and even quality of video is superior.
Hopefully this Could be fixed through app update.

4.0 out of 5 stars To buy or not to buy…that is the BIG question!
By Vincent Albert on 21 October 2021
I have been using a 2nd-gen Fire TV stick since 2018 and so far I didn’t have an issue (except that the remote drains the battery very quickly), until recently when the remote fell from my hand and it stopped working. As a work-around I have been using my TV remote after I paired it with Firestick and also with the Fire TV app on my mobile.

I finally bought the 4K Max on the 3rd day after its launch on Amazon just out of curiosity (even though the price is high …. i.e., almost 3 times a 2nd gen stick).
Currently it’s been launched at full MRP Rs. 6499 as printed on the box (while in the US it launched at $55 only).

Have been using the 4K Max for more than 10 days and here is my detailed feedback on Amazon Prime content:
    1) Remote pairing and connection issue – it took me 4-5 mins to pair the remote with the stick first time! I even de-registered my amazon "device" account and re-registered just to check if that was an issue. It was not…but after many trials...it finally paired…. somehow. On a day to day basis, the remote also goes into a sort of “sleep” mode if your TV is paused and the screensaver starts. The remote is not on an “always connected” mode it seems. The Power and Volume buttons has its own mind and works only when it feels so (and in those instances you go back to your TV remote again). The “All apps” dedicated button is a helpful inclusion in the remote.

    2) The latest UI update with a more organized layout already had been out even for my 2nd gen stick few weeks back, hence didn’t find any layout difference. Although the scrolling is much smoother now.

    3) I have a 4K UHD TV, and I am assuming I have one of the HDMI port with HDCP 2.2 support, as I see on the top corner when I connect the port with a “2160p60” text appearing for a moment. Screenshot attached. I have a wireless broadband with dual band 2.4 and 5GHz wifi connection and with 75Mbps speed, which does fulfill all the required criteria to watch UHD 4K content always…or does it? Read on….

    4) I played few different movies marked with UHD logo to check the playback quality. Based on the instantaneous speed availability at that moment, my connection has been showing HD, HD 1080p, HD HDR, UltraHD HDR at the bottom of the screen based on different times of the day randomly I have played content from Amazon Prime…I have seen them all at various times. There are times if you started a movie with HD HDR or HD 1080p quality and paused in between and played again after some time, it would go down to HD for the later part. That’s a bummer. Screenshots attached.

    5) Sound quality variations noticed for different movies were Dolby, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby ATMOS (not all movie content has this anyways, and there is a whole webpage how to find 4K and Dolby ATMOS content if you google it) …. this again I presume is based on the broadband speed at that instant.

    6) I tried to find difference in transmission in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi connection speed, there is no apparent improvement of either one. My wifi router is kept 15-20 ft away from my TV, so its not too far away for a data speed drop.

    7) To check your TV’s Display and Sound capability, you can click the ‘Audio and Video Diagnostics’ tool under the Settings. Screenshot attached.

    Streaming quality with other apps:

    1) Audio & video quality with YouTube (free) content – This has streaming content with the best picture clarity amongst all the competitors, but the sound hovers around average quality only. You should search specifically for 4K content and play to believe it. Screenshot attached.

    2) Audio & video quality with Disney+ Hotstar content – If you have a Premium account this too has 4K streaming quality with 5.1 audio. Screenshot attached. The regular subscription has Full HD (or 1080p) content only.

    3) Audio & video quality with Apple TV+ content – I would rank the streaming content as 2nd. The sound quality is best. Screenshot attached.

    4) Audio & video quality with Netflix (basic plan) content– This is a mixed bag. Sometimes good and other times choppy and average. The other issue is, it doesn’t show the quality content info when a movie is played. For 4K content you have to subscribe to its Premium plan.

What upgrade do I feel vis-à-vis my current 2nd gen firestick?
    - More clarity and richer color in scenery detail and material textures observed if you are viewing HD HDR & UltraHD HDR content with the available transmission speed at that moment. You may have to set the streaming to Best quality on each of the apps you are using, in case the default quality is set to medium / normal / Auto in the Settings.

    - Sound quality has improved if the transmission is in Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby ATMOS if you have a 5.1 (or 7.1) home theater.

    - Alexa is smarter now, and understands our Indian English pronunciation quicker 😊

    Suggestions which might probably work-out:
    - A wired broadband might be the best bet to get continuous UltraHD HDR content or maybe the new WiFi 6 router or with a combination of a Repeater with Wifi 5 router.

    - Would love to hear from others on what have been their experience and how they improved their settings to get the best out of 4K Max.

I finally give 4 stars to this new 4K Max stick, 1 star less for the high price.
