Product description

Praise for The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue:

"For someone damned to be forgettable, Addie LaRue is a most delightfully unforgettable character, and her story is the most joyous evocation of unlikely immortality." --Neil Gaiman, author of American Gods and winner of multiple Nebula, Hugo, and Locus Awards

"Victoria Schwab sends you whirling through a dizzying kaleidoscopic adventure through centuries filled with love, loss, art and war all the while dazzling your senses with hundreds of tiny magical moments along the way. The Invisible Life of Addie Larue will enchant readers as deeply as its heroine's Faustian bargain; you will find yourself in quick turns both aching with heartbreak, and gleefully crowing at the truly delicious, wicked cleverness in store." --Naomi Novik, Nebula and Locus Award-winning author of Spinning Silver

"Addie LaRue is a book perfectly suspended between darkness and light, myth and reality. [This novel] is ironically unforgettable." --Hugo Award winner Alix E. Harrow, author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January

"The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is the kind of book you encounter only once in a lifetime. . . . A defiant, joyous rebellion against time, fate, and even death itself and a powerful reminder that the only magic great enough to conquer all of it is love." --Peng Shepherd, author of The Book of M

"Sweeping in its scope yet wonderfully intimate, it's dark and sexy yet romantic and heartbreaking." --Rebecca Roanhorse, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of Black Sun

"There are twists aplenty young Henry has secrets of his own but what we take from this beautiful, sweet and utterly engaging story is a message of love and hope." --Daily Mail

"Fantasy star Schwab pulls out all the stops." --i, '75 of the best new books for Autumn'

"'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' by way of Wes Anderson - and you won t forget Addie after reading it." --SFX

"A knockout." --Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"A beautiful, meditative novel with an ending that hit me right in the heart." --Buzzfeed, Best Fall Fantasy 2020

"Deeply romantic, impossibly detailed." --Booklist, Starred Review

"Schwab s writing is warm and intense, and the passages set in the past often make you feel as if you re reading by candlelight... The book is an elegant comment on the erasure of women from recorded history, but not a pointed one; you never feel that Addie LaRue is a metaphor. She is a woman fighting literally to be seen while bearing witness to her own life, and I rooted for her throughout." --New York Times

"Rich and satisfying." --Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

Praise for the Shades of Magic series:

"Addictive and immersive, this series is a must-read." -- Entertainment Weekly, Grade A, on A Gathering of Shadows

"A gem of a tale.... This is a book to treasure." --Deborah Harkness on A Darker Shade of Magic

"Compulsively readable.... With so many worlds on the map, there's plenty left to discover." --NPR on A Darker Shade of Magic

"Feels like a priceless object, brought from another, better world of fantasy books." --io9 on A Darker Shade of Magic

3.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing read with a beautiful writing style
By Tanmay on 6 October 2020
Thank you Netgalley and Titan books for the e-arc and Librofm for ALC

One of my most anticipated reads for 2020 was The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue which sadly didnt live up to my expectations but many others have loved this book so purely subjective here and 3
In this book we follow Addie LaRue who has made a deal with the devil to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets in France 1714. One day in 2014 she stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

I would say this book is a mix between magical realism and historical fiction. So dont go expecting too much magic or fantasy. I have wrote down some pros and cons to explain my rating
1 Themes exploring - I always love how VE Scwab asks Questions and makes us think and I always like to read to learn something or explore side or a history I didnt know better. This book explored Would you be rather be forgotten or be loved ? Rather have no expectations of you or live up to the expectations of others ? When would you be you ? I am personally at a stage where its hard to live up to everyones expectations of around me so the idea of being forgotten sounded so good so I was happy how this was explored
2 Writing style V E Schwab writing style is so beautiful and I was hooked through out because of it
“Books, she has found, are a way to live a thousand lives—or to find strength in a very long one.”
“...it is sad, of course, to forget.
But it is a lonely thing, to be forgotten.
To remember when no one else does.”
3 Narrator I also listened to the audiobook and the narrator Julia Whelan is one of my favorites and she gave the book such an amazing voice

CONS
1 Not that interesting plot - I do think the plot was weak and the pace was not at all consistent I cant even say it was slow, smooth or fast. Many plot threads were not needed or just felt wrong to me. Also the ending just a big NO from me
2 Characters - While the characters Addie , Henry and Luc ( devil ) I didnt connect to anyone that much and there were not even many side characters to save the story

TL;DR :- A good read but i think not perfect for introduction to Schwab works. Kind of disappointed with this one
I also did a CAWPILE RATING for this one
Character - 6/10
Atmosphere -7 /10
Writing -9/10
Plot -6/10
Intrigue -5/10
Logic -7 /10
Enjoyment - 8 /10
TOTAL - 6.86 /10
