(spoilers) Read this to my train obsessed eldest (6yrs). A few sinister references to throat cutting, and teeth pulling, both which drag out over a fair number chapters so aren’t positively concluded before the bookmark is placed back and the lights go out for bedtime. There are also grammatical errors and incomplete sentences in our paperback edition.
Much preferred the first book, with more details about trains, whereas this had more detail about the journey. A little easier to work out the culprits and the crime, a tooth fairy had only visited us the day before, but makes the ending even more rewarding.
The crimes are escalating, I spotted book three is a murder 😬 likely leave that for a couple of years 😵 but likely still read it to catch up with Hal 😄.

My daughter and I read this book together as a bedtime story, having previously read the first mystery in the series, The Highland Falcon Thief. So this time we were ready to be detectives alongside Hal and spent our time thinking who would be kidnapped and who had done the crime! It was good to be back with the familiar characters of Uncle Nat and Hal and to meet their fellow travellers on the California Comet. The illustrations are beautiful and add so much to the story, Hal (aka Elisa Paganelli) uses his amazing artistic skills to help him solve the mystery.
This is a unique series of books which allows you to travel the world whilst you have to stay at home and is really an Agatha Christie series for the 8-12 age range. We will certainly be climbing aboard the Safari Star next, but a MURDER? Uh Oh!

During the trip on the California Comet we find Harrison has managed to make some friends with a few children onboard but when one of those friends disappears following a clearly witnessed kidnap can Harrison and his new friends come up with the answer to find what has happened and solve this mystery?
This is another well worked and clever story that is for children but can easily be read by adults as there is no dumbing down in the language or style of writing. There are a few little edit niggles that takes a little off the rating but overall this is a book I really did enjoy and can confirm that the other books in the series are on the kindle ready.

BRAVO!
