Marlon James was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1970. He is the author of The Book of Night Women, which won the 2010 Dayton Literary Peace Prize, The Minnesota Book Award and was a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction as well as an NAACP Image Award. His first novel John Crow’s Devil was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Commonwealth Writers Prize, and was a New York Times Editor’s Choice. In his third novel, A Brief History Of Seven Killings, James is exploring multiple genres: the political thriller, the oral biography, and the classic whodunit to confront the untold history of Jamaica in the late 1970’s; of the assassination attempt on Bob Marley, and the country’s own clandestine battles of the cold war.
James graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1991 with a degree in Language And Literature, and from Wilkes University in 2006 with a Masters in creative writing. His short fiction and nonfiction have appeared widely including in Esquire, Granta, and The Caribbean Review of Books.

Enjoyed this immensely, however there are some harsh references. The stories are interesting and spellbinding...could not put it down...but I was left feeling both satifised and sad. A raw telling of slices of life in Kingston that will both shock and make the reader smile.

Some truly remarkable stories. “A Grave Affair” by Ian Thomson could be in a New Yorker. However, as a collection this book is subpar. Mindless violence, especially when the theme of too many stories, is at the same time disturbing and boring. Quite a pernicious combination for a reader.

It captures the raw underbelly, and more importantly the rich spiciness peculiar to Kingston, Jamaica. Kingston, a city akin to every big city, but at the same time unique unto itself in its moist, sultry breezes, its characters, all seeking salvation of one sort or nother; its patois and its cultural memories propelling the characters toward their inevitable conclusions. Lacking the British hauteur of the Bahamas, the steely sweetness of Trinidad and the professional amiability of Barbados, Jamaica, exemplified by Kingston Noir is a straight-up, no nonsense window into the psyche of the Jamaican people, smart, savvy, ganja-smoking hustlers, avenging angels and people trying to do right in a society that may or may not have done them wrong. How refreshing to read about a people for whom white opinion, white judgement, isn't even a blip on their radar screen. We can all learn something from that.
