Many many years ago, one of my friends told me the story of Befana - and I fell in love with it. So when I saw this book, I thought it would be a great little book to give to my niece & nephew. I sat down to read it when I received it - and it didn't take but 3 pages to see the stories are drastically different. I have to believe that the published story is the accurate one - so I have to ask my friend where the heck she came up with or heard her version. BUT, this book is beautifully illustrated and great for kids.
There are different versions of "Befana" but this particular one is quite good. I enjoyed reading this to some younger school children as a way to present how Christmas traditions can vary around the world. Befana brings little gifts on January 6th just as the 3 "WISE" men did on the 1st Christmas. DePaola helps make the legend enjoyable for children who may wait until Jan.6th to receive a gift from the woman who followed the "Magi" on their way to Bethlehem.
