Just takes you through the history of it all. I bought this book expecting the different authors and an elaboration on their works or at least, their works/essays in it, but it doesn't do that. 2 stars for good quality cover and delivery etc, it wasn't useful for me

Clearly one of the best books available on the subject. Excellent coverage of the everexpanding field of literary theory. And the best part is the price: truly student friendly!

Book arrived in poor condition
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 May 2019Verified Purchase
The content of the book is a really interesting and broad introduction to literary theory, but when my copy arrived the spine had literally snapped within a few minutes of reading it. It wasn't just a broken spine, but the binding fell completely apart in several places and pages were falling out within ten minutes of reading the book. This is understandably a large book, but books of a similar size and binding have fared much better and have remained bound perfectly despite much more reading. Very disappointed.

Better than Norton
Reviewed in Canada on 24 February 2014Verified Purchase
Clear and concise, yet detailed, with helpful suggestions for further reading. What I especially enjoyed about this text was its entry on trauma theory, which I have found to be lacking from other critical anthologies. I recommend this volume to students of theory who are looking for the most up-to-the-minute survey of the critical landscape.

A Mixed Bag
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 June 2016Verified Purchase
This anthology is a mixed bag. Although prone to over-simplification, some essays are enlightening and stimulates thought. Others are murky waters: pieces that move within small circles of contemporary or outmodeded jargon (e.g. "Freud and psychoanalysis"). Others again (e.g. "Marxists aesthetics") are little more than exercises in name dropping. The understanding of Plato is - rightfully - praised elsewhere. Symptomatically though, that same essay contains a presentation of Aristotle which is plain wrong.
