Excellent book. It is very deep and kids can understand some aspects of it. I generally like Dr Seuss for his rhyming words and imaginary characters. This book is different and its message is extremely relevant in our world. It shows how a simple ambitious boy finds a pristine place and starts a business using the resources there. By apathy, callousness and pure corporate greed he completely destroys the place and the company itself has to leave the place and move on. It leaves with the message that unless someone like you wakes up and does something about it nothing will change. This simple message is put very effectively and with style and technique which very few authors have accomplished in their entire lives. This is one of the gloomy dark stories of Dr Seuss. For tongue twisters my 3.5 year old son loves ``Fox in Socks", for simple stories he likes ``Horton Hatches an egg". He even loves A.B C by Seuss.
Several of Dr Suess stories are based on his social and political views. I feel this is probably his best executed literary work.
If you are planning to give it as a birthday gift to other kids, you should consider their age and background.

"Seuss' genius wordplay makes for a vitally enjoyable lesson in which path not to take." Bournemouth Daily Echo

When Dr. Seuss gets serious, you know it must be important. Published in 1971, and perhaps inspired by the "save our planet" mindset of the 1960s, The Lorax is an ecological warning that still rings true today amidst the dangers of clear-cutting, pollution, and disregard for the earth's environment. In The Lorax, we find what we've come to expect from the illustrious doctor: brilliantly whimsical rhymes, delightfully original creatures, and weirdly undulating illustrations. But here there is also something more--a powerful message that Seuss implores both adults and children to heed. Now, in this special gift box, Dr. Seuss's crotchety, tree-loving Lorax emerges as a hand puppet! "He's shortish. And oldish ... And brownish. And mossy ... And he spoke with a voice ... that was sharpish and bossy." Each butterscotch-colored eight-inch Lorax puppet--made of entirely unnatural plush polyester fiber--isn't your usual hand puppet: Little hands must grip the pillowy top fixed inside the head to make the puppet come to life, which limits his motion to nodding wistfully (as the Lorax is wont to do) and bobbing meaningfully. Each puppet comes with a perfect miniature facsimile edition of The Lorax all packaged in a sturdy, earth-friendly box made out of recyclable corrugated paper. Save the Truffula Trees, Swomee-Swans, Brown Bar-ba-loots, and Humming-Fishes!

About the Author
Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. His advertising cartoons, featuring Quick, Henry, the Flit!, appeared in several leading American magazines. Dr. Seuss's first children's book, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, hit the market in 1937, and the world of children's literature was changed forever! In 1957, Seuss's The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House's best- selling series, Beginner Books. This popular series combined engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped kids learn to read.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 children's books, some of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

A fantastic book from a brilliant wordsmith.
I love all the books by Dr. Seuss and enjoy reading
them out to my three-year old son. He loves The
Cat in the Hat and The Lorax, both famous works
by Dr. Seuss.
The writer is a fine rhymester, creating lovely, musical
lines. Read this one:
"Mister!" He said with a sawdusty sneeze,
"I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees.
I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.
And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs,"
he was very upset as he shouted and puffed--
"What's that THING you've made out of my Truffula tuft?"
I recommend all the books by Dr Seuss -- they are available for
different age groups -- as their reading will develop a love for
words and language at an early age.
We must thank God for Dr. Seuss and his books.

A classic. Child has to be a little older to appreciate the story. For toddlers, there are other Dr. Seuss books more age appropriate.

This book can be read by kids of 8-9 years and above. But my 4 year old daughter love to hear this story from me. I too enjoy telling it to her. Weird but rhyming names of animals, trees and other things are attractive to kids.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS EDITION -- The publisher has messed it up terribly
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2015Verified Purchase
I could not be more disappointed in the publisher's choice to drastically alter this story for this publishing. I purchased this book for our son and hoped to receive the same story I had been read as a child, but huge chunks of the narrative have just been heavy-handedly deleted, along with the lovely illustrations which once accompanied those sections. Many of my favourite moments of the original are altogether missing, and the characters and story have lost so much of their texture and personality, it's a terrible shame. It should be more clearly stated on this page that the book is abridged. Not only abridged, but abridged much to its detriment I'm sad to say.
Furthermore, what illustrations are left have been awkwardly and often clumsily cropped into new dimensions, cutting out masses of Seuss' original drawings and generally messing up what used to be lovely balanced and detailed compositions. If you're buying this book for the art as well as the story, you should know that this book just wrecks the half of the illustrations which haven't been cut out entirely.
Please find yourself a complete copy and experience this book the way Dr. Seuss intended. I'm horrified to imagine what the author would think of this blundersome hack-job edit of one of the great children's masterpieces.

EVERYBODY needs a Thneed!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2017Verified Purchase
This is a lovely book - kooky Seuss charm and some strong environmental and commercial messages. It's about as subtle as a brick through a window, but kids often like clear messages, and my son has definitely picked up on them! It's sparked some great conversations in our house and the characters are strong, interesting and flawed, which is still not that common in a children's book.
Revisiting this book as an adult, you realise that it's a very well-written story about family, commercialisation, the environment and redemption (I mean, it's not "Of Mice and Men", but you know...). It's one of the Seuss books that's more appropriate for older children. Finally, coming up with lots of other things you could use a Thneed for is now a family joke, and a very creative one!

Beautiful solid quality, stunning illustrations, engaging subject for children and adults alike.

I bought this book as a 10th birthday present for my sons step-daughter to encourage her to read aloud to her little sister. It's not her birthday yet so she hasn't seen it.
This 50th anniversary edition comes in a lovely solid heavy cardboard case. The hard cover is equally solid. The quality of the print and the colours are as stunning as the original. There are tick box lists inside the front and back covers for small and larger projects that help a child engage themself and friends an d family with the environmental messages contained within the text of the book.
I am thrilled with the quality of this book, especially as I bought it as a gift. I'm very excited about reading it with the little girl it's for. First job will be to decide upon a voice and an accent for the Lorax himself.

I have always loved this story, so much so that when I was in business college I used this book for a presentation on the environmental impacts of business.
This is a really good book for introducing children to what happens when we abuse our environment. Perfect book for today's society. It discusses and clearly shows how the destruction of one thing can impact the entire eco system around it.
Buy this, share it with your children..start the conversations at an early age. My little one is 5 and really enjoyed the story plus the conversation we had afterwards..

Absolutely wonderful children's book that both my son and I enjoyed very much. The illustrations are beautiful and as a 3 year old my son was able to understand the underlying 'moral' to the story. A really great book if you are looking to start a dialog with your children on social responsibility, the environment and the importance of nature. Would very much recommend.
