Jess loves all animals. She loves the natural world they live in, too. She thinks it is very important that we all work hard to protect the natural world, so she writes books about how we can do that. The books are mainly marketed at a children, but Jess knows that it's mostly the grown ups that need educating. She hopes that the wonderful children that read her books will be kind enough to educate the silly grown ups they meet about animals, the environment and what we can do to save them.

As well as writing, Jess works as a vet. She once ultrasounded a snow leopard and has also looked inside a crocodile's stomach! She is sometimes seen on CBeebies talking about minibeasts and also works as a teacher for school groups that are interested in animals and the natural world.

This quality produced hardback measures around 29.5 cm square, the bright, beady eyes on the lightly textured front cover luring you in!
The title, ‘LOST SPECIES’ is embossed in pastel shades and the inside cover pages are the most gorgeous, subdued shades of pinky-lilac, turning over the page to a pale lemony shade, reversing at the close of the book.

From the back cover (image below refers):

📝 ‘Dinosaurs, dodos, giant sharks, sabre-toothed cats…so many magnificent animals once roamed the planet.

From ancient swamp forests to modern-day landscapes, encounter these incredible creatures up close in their natural habitats. And find out about a special few ‘lost’ species that were believed to be extinct ~ but defied the odds and survived.’

Inside the durable covers are 64 quality, matte-finish, numbered pages, set over double page spreads that are well presented with clear text accompanied by vibrant, atmospheric illustrations, from Daniel Long, throughout, which have far more in the backdrops than first meets the eye.

The CONTENTS, at the front (3rd image below refers), splits the book up into main sections, namely:

~ ASIA
~ AUSTRALASIA
~ AFRICA
~ OCEAN
~ SOUTH AMERICA
~ NORTH AMERICA
~ EUROPE

…with each subdivided into the various creatures, with some paragraphs of general information, along with the same 3 pieces of data in a pastel coloured circle for each, namely:

~ ‘FOUND IN’
~ ‘EXTINCTION DATE’
~ ‘EXTINCTION CAUSE’

So, if you have an interest in the tongue-twisting ‘KUNBARRASAURUS’ or want to know more about ‘MEGANEURA’, for example, look no further!

At the front, is a 2-page ‘INTRODUCTION’, from the author, which touches on the importance of looking after the planet to help preserve what we still have, followed by a ‘WORLD MAP OF EXTINCT SPECIES’, with sections entitled ‘MASS EXTINCTION EVENTS’, ‘LAZARUS SPECIES’ & ‘EXTINCTION TIMELINE’, at the back.

With a good balance of text to illustration, IMO, the current stock images above give an idea of the layout, and I am sure, the LOOK INSIDE facility will be along once this super book is released, in the not too distant future.

My attached images do not pick up the true depth of colour in the stunning illustrations, which is VERY hard to capture, e.g. that nonchalant 'ATLAS BEAR', at the foot of page 29!
