5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating retelling
By Raksha Soni on 1 September 2020
Mohini the enchantress by Anuja Chandramouli is a fascinating book to read. It is a beaufiful retelling of the story of the strong mythological character, Mohini.

Mohini was created by Lord Vishnu to enchant Asuras to win the battle without tearing blood drops. She was praised for her beauty and engulfed with fascination such that people were ready to forego their luxuries and possessions to be with her. Mohini was bearer of irresistible beauty that no one can imagine their world without her. She had even passed through the alleys of Lord Shiva's heart.

The author has boldly presented the perspective of Mohini about Indian Gods and Goddesses. There are a number of tales and fables about Mohini being just an evergreen enchantress, but this book will open up many unread and unheard pages of her story. She is an independent character and doesn't need anyone. She doesn't seek anybody's approval. She is more than an enchantress and her role in the history is embarked with brave and bold self-sufficient personality.

Anuja has beautifully highlighted other strong female characters like Diti and Aditi, Ganga, Bhumi Devi and Kavyamata and their importance. I would have never known their roles and significance in the history. She has also put light on the flaws and mistakes of Gods and the literary. Asura's weren't always the evil, but the Gods had also served somehow as the depravities. There is also the mention of patriarchy, women'a tyranny and LGBTQ community.

Overall, it is a flattering retelling of Mohini's story which is so modern and relatable. However, the language of the book is so refined that everyone may not get what the author is narrating and serving. The starting was slow and off, it took time to build up the plot of the story, but it caught the pace later.

The author has well researched about the fables of Mohini and demonstrated the same in an incredible manner. The cover of the book is so beautiful. I am fascinated by the author's impressive and modern way of presenting the old age fable.
