Product description

Review

Elegant, sinister, stylish and thrilling, The Maidens answers the weighty question, how do you go about following one of the biggest thrillers of the past decade? You write something even better. ― CHRIS WHITAKER

Alex has achieved the almost impossible and surpassed The Silent Patient in this compelling literary thriller, which grips from intriguing start to horrifying finish ... A brilliant achievement. ― HARRIET TYCE

What a thrilling, heart in throat ride. A great triumph. ― STEPHEN FRY

A deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive read - with a twist that blew my mind. I loved this even more than I loved The Silent Patient and that's saying something! ― LUCY FOLEY

Alex Michaelides hits a home run in his sophomore effort. The Maidens is a page-turner of the first order. ― DAVID BALDACCI

A stunning psychological thriller ... The intelligent, cerebral plot finds contemporary parallels in Euripides's tragedies, Jacobean dramas such as The Duchess of Malfi, and Tennyson's poetry. The devastating ending shows just how little the troubled Mariana knows about the human psyche or herself. Michaelides is on a roll. ― Publishers Weekly

The greatest campus novel since The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Packed to the dreaming spires with mystery, murder, emotion and a yearning, heart-aching nostalgia for all that we leave in the past - places, lovers and ourselves when we were young. The millions who loved The Silent Patient will be delighted to hear that Alex Michaelides once again mugs you with a climatic twist that you will NEVER see coming. ― TONY PARSONS

Michaelides' stage-setting skills are as masterful here, as they were in The Silent Patient - another tense, cleverly twisted winner. ― Booklist

Book Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly mind-blowing!
By Reader1996 on 25 June 2021
I cannot begin to describe what an incredibly stunning read this was. His debut novel 'The Silent Patient' was the ultimate read that got me officially initiated into this genre (dramatic but TRUE) and I had expected no less from 'The Maidens' either. And guess what? It gave me even more! 'The Maidens' is exactly why I love psychological thrillers so freakin' much. And you know what? I kinda feel proud that I could - quite early on - correctly identify the person who had been writing the memoir! And I was like YAASSSS I KNEW IT!!!

Haha. Now. I don't want to say ANYTHING negative about this book, thanks to the brilliant plot twists, the captivating pace, the intriguing characters, and the conscientious descriptions of the aesthetic Cambridge University. Nevertheless, one aspect of this book that could have been done better was the number of red herrings. There were just too many. And as someone who digs thrillers like cake, I can tell you (quite accurately) that everytime a person is associated with a red herring, that person is never the killer. That way, I had to strike out almost all the suspicious characters before the big reveal and duh. I was right. But it didn't matter since I had already had my suspicions with the least suspicious characters anyway.

All in all, it was an unbelievably enthralling read. This book exceeded my expectations which were already quite high, to begin with! I really cannot wait for his next one. I wonder what that's going to be about. ❤

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but Not Upto the Mark
By Ria Saha | ria_the_reader on 3 December 2021
Mariana Andros, a group therapist is convinced that magnificent and charismatic Edward Fosca, Greek Tragedy professor of Cambridge, is a murderer. Narcissistic and flirtatious professor, Edward Fosca is loved by everyone in the Cambridge, mostly by the group of young women, named The Maidens, formed by Fosca himself. Things turned bad when a young student of the Maidens group, close friend of Mariana's niece Zoe, gets murdered. Inspite of having his alibi, Mariana suspects and was certain that Fosca ha murdered the student. And now, she is after Fosca and could go to any extent to prove Fosca is the actual murderer. But is he really?
Let me tell you that I am a big fan of @alex.michaelides debut novel #thesilentpatient and i was too much excited when he announced his second novel, #themaidens . I was expecting a good thriller, dark academia when i picked up this one, set in the beautiful campus of Cambridge. But, but but after reading from cover to cover i must say i am disappointed. May be because i was expecting wayy too much or may be because this is really poorly written. I rightly guessed the ending even before i was 50% into the book.

The good part of this book is the beautiful descriptions of the Cambridge campus that made me think of having Doraemon's Anywhere door and visit the place right then.

The bad?? A little longer list as i have too many complaints. When a short book like The Maidens feel unnecessary stretchy then there's definitely something very wrong with the writing style. Under developed characters. Incompetent police and detectives who are always left behind by a group therapist. Too many plot holes bigger than the potholes in our locality.
Trust me, my tirade can go on and on but i dont want to make this review as stretchy as The Maidens. So, withdrawing my cursor by saying that if you have more than enough time, you can pick it up.
