Product description

About the Author

Agatha Christie, in full Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, née Miller, (born 15th September 1890, Torquay, Devon, England – died 12th January 1976, Wallingford, Oxfordshire), English detective novelist and playwright whose books have sold more than 100 million copies and have been translated into some 100 languages. Educated at home by her mother, Christie began writing detective fiction while working as a nurse during World War I. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920), introduced Hercule Poirot, her eccentric and egotistic Belgian detective; Poirot reappeared in about 25 novels and many short stories before returning to Styles, where, in Curtain (1975), he died. The elderly spinster Miss Jane Marple, her other principal detective figure, first appeared in Murder at the Vicarage (1930). Christie’s first major recognition came with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926), which was followed by some 75 novels that usually made best-seller lists and were serialized in popular magazines in England and the United States. Christie’s plays include The Mousetrap (1952), which set a world record for the longest continuous run at one theatre (8,862 performances – more than 21 years – at the Ambassadors Theatre, London) and then moved to another theatre, and Witness for the Prosecution, which, like many of her works, was adapted into a successful film. Other notable film adaptations include Murder on the Orient Express (1933; film 1974 and 2017) and Death on the Nile (1937; film 1978). Her works were also adapted for television. In 1926 Christie’s mother died, and her husband, Colonel Archibald Christie, requested a divorce. In a move she never fully explained, Christie disappeared and, after several highly publicized days, was discovered registered in a hotel under the name of the woman her husband wished to marry. In 1930 Christie married the archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan; thereafter she spent several months each year on expeditions in Iraq and Syria with him. She also wrote romantic nondetective novels, such as Absent in the Spring (1944), under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott.

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light and upbeat.

- Agatha Christie

🔍The Man in the Brown Suit is inspired by Agatha’s round-the-world 10-month-long work trip she took with her first husband Archie Christie in 1922. The story is influenced by her own travel which makes the book ever the more interesting to read.

💭This was my first non Poirot/Marple novel and it’s also the first book of the Colonel Race series. It was a fun and light read which I finished in two sittings due to it being fast paced. Not a usual Christie novel I’d say, it was a little bit of everything like mystery, murder, thriller, espionage(mostly this) and very little romance. But of course, it didn’t blew my mind or left me astounded. Nevertheless, it captivated me throughout the story which I liked the best. I loved how smoothly everything was moving along, without any impediments.

📖A young orphan girl Anne Beddingfeld, with a few pounds in her pocket has set herself for an adventure to solve the mysterious crime that she has seen at a station. A heroine who is fierce, devoted and intelligent who also finds love obliviously on this adventurous journey to Africa. But does she even know that how big a scene this is or how dangerous the people involved in this crime is?

🔺At the end, satisfied at having taken the adventure with Anne, I recommend you to read this book if you’re looking for a read that is light and upbeat!

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality issues - clunky translated version (now replaced)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2020
This Kindle version has some quality issues, I think it has been replaced with a translated version that has been translated back to English. It's unreadable.

A couple of sentences from the same page:

"Jeanne brought the peignoir, an super wisp of corn-colored chiffon and ermine." (sic)

"The Count turned into spark off to avail himself of the privilege accorded to him - a person of medium top, very slender, very fashionable, very faded, rather weary. In characteristic, little to take preserve of, a man difficult to understand once more if one left his mannerisms out of account." (sic)

I'm not judging the book in this review, just the version available to download. Please take a look at the sample before purchasing.

Edited: it looks like Amazon may have replaced the poorly translated version. If purchasing, look for the cover that features a ship. Not the one that just has the title in white (pictured).
