A tracker-turned-conservationist, Jim Corbett was a renowned writer and Wildlife expert. Born on 25 July 1875, he was appointed a Colonel in the British Indian Army and was often requested by the government of the United province (modern-day utter Pradesh and Uttarakhand) to hunt man-eaters and leopards that spread terror in the Garhwal and Kumar region. An avid photographer, corbett's books, particularly man-eaters of Kumar and jungle lore achieved international critical acclaim and earned global recognition. As a conservationist, Corbett was instrumental in spreading awareness and drawing up programmes for the protection of India's wildlife. He also played a key role in the creation of a national Reserve for the Bengal tiger. As a homage to his tireless contribution to wild life conversation and welfare, the National Reserve was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1957, two years after Corbett passed away in 1955.

His fanatical sense of hunting made him a hero in the eyes of the Indian villagers who would come to ask his help for killing tigers. He loved photography and took many beautiful photographs. He would educate school children on how to safeguard and conserve natural forests. He helped form India's first national park in the Kumaon region. Panthera Tigris Corbetti was the tiger who was named after him.

Those illustrations bring the stories to life - very evocative and adds a wonderful visual dimension to Jim Corbett's words, description and world - Merlin Unwin publishes it, i've ordered it, to replace this one - eagerly awaiting it's arrival

A shiver goes through your spine just imagining yourself in his boots in those deep forests which ware far from civilization. Even a 100 years later, ie now, you wouldn't dare go to such forests( eventhough most of it is history now).It shows the constant struggle our forefathers had when they had to fight their way up with the nature. A true legend when it comes to hunting and tracking animals and quite brilliant when it comes to the knowledge of forest and animal behaviour, Jim Corbett already knew a hundred years ago, what we now have learned through the tv channels and YouTube.Most of the cats mentioned in the book, whom he hunted down are at the top of list of the most dangerous animals that ever lived. From a man who was forced to take his gun and go up against the deadliest of the predators, not because he loved hunting but since he had stomachs to fill makes him one among the few with balls of steel I ever came across. The 4 starts instead of 5 is obviously coz I am an animal lover but still I have given him 4 because like today it was near to impossible to catch these cats alive.

This is another of Sir Jim Corbett's thrilling works. Before reading 'Man Eaters of Kumaon', i had read 'Man Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag', and i feel i should have reviewed that book with 5 Stars, and not 4. Both the books are magnificent and give an adrenaline rush. The Rudraprayag Leopard one is a single story about the author tracking this single leopard. Kumaon Man Eaters, however, is a compilation of author's numerous experiences ridding the Garhwal region of time and again of a notorious man killer. The author is an enormously gifted individual and has the fantastic ability of drawing the reader in to his story and, with the power of his narrative, making the whole scene come alive. It was great fun reading this book and during the course of reading, i found myself unable to resist the urge to continue reading or not being able to stay away from the book for long after a break. Simply fabulous.

This is a hum dinging Indian adventure. Jim Corbett the legendary Shikari, or hunter and a sterling example to young boys looking for an example of courage and gentlemanly conduct.
Corbett was immensely fond of the region around Nainital which in those days was a hill station surrounded by dense and untamed forest.
With little more than courage and his rifle, he performed a service in many regions of north India patiently tracking and then shooting a host of man eating tigers. He describes many stories on a case by case basis.
One fearful story sticks out of a lady removed by a tiger from her hut, from the midst of her family as they slept on the floor, with the tiger silently entering and leaving via a small window, whose flower pot was not dislodged in the manouevre, carrying her prone body silently through this same window!
In modern terms the killing of endangered species seems rather politically incorrect. One must understand the times and circumstances of those days, where one man eating tiger might kill a couple hundred villagers, effectively terrorising whole communities.
He describes the art of tracking, the signs of a kill with blood trails and animal tracks all part of his focussed world that helped him subjugate these fearsome beasts. What is also clear is his immense respect for these animals and his immense courage- to shoot a 300Ib cat at twenty yards, between the eyes as it approaches you, and kill it instantly and humanely - is an astonishingly courageous feat.
Later on Corbett or 'Carpetsahib' came to regret the slaughter of these magnificent beasts as he saw modernity encroaching irreversibly on their native habitats.
This is effectively an autobiography and a classic of Raj India that gives a taste of a dying set of values in an ever shrinking world. Gentlemanly, and deeply loving of his Indian countrymen, as an English man he sets the example of genuinely Chivalrous conduct from a bygone and classical era, that says as much about the loss to modernity of Indias habitat , as it does about the loss to modernity of many old and 'classic' British qualities.

Im not going to write a full book review here. But I first read the book 25yrs ago and found the copy in my loft. My 12 yr old nephew was going toIndia this Christmas which got me reading it again. Jim Corbett in my humble opinion is probably the single most important person in creating the sanctuaries that the few tigers left in India live in today. I re read my copy if the book, enjoyed it so much I had to get a copy for my nephew. now the icing on the cake was the photo I received on boxing day, yes he actually did see and capture an image of one of these majestic creatures where they should be. I hope Jim would be proud. It's a great read and insight into a time gone by.
