The Manga Cookbook combines food with a little bit of fun. Each recipe is associated with a character that could have come straight out of a manga (mobile suit, pirate, personal butler, class president, etc.) and is preceded by a one-page comic which introduces both the character and dish in a humorous fashion.

The fully-illustrated recipes aren't overly complex but are still intriguing, ready substitutions are recommended for some of the ingredients that might be more difficult to find, and even I learned a few new tricks and techniques! --Ash Brown - Manga Bookshelf

About the Author

The Manga University Culinary Institute was dreamed up by publisher Glenn Kardy when he grew peckish during a very real, very long editorial meeting. Yoko Ishihara has served as head chef since the institute's inception.

For this edition, chef Kyle Paul took a sabbatical from his Seattle gig to dazzle us in Saitama, while art editor Yukio Onishi went from the drawing board to the cutting board and back again. Mari Oyama kept the test kitchen crew on its toes.

The institute has published four cookbooks since 2007: "The Manga Cookbook: Japanese Bento Boxes, Main Dishes and More!"; "The Manga Cookbook 2: More Delicious Japanese Dishes!"; "The Manga Cookbook 3: Japanese Fusion Food with Character!"; and Alice in Matchaland: A Japanese Green Tea Cookbook and Adventure."
