About Melissa Ellen Penn
As a Veteran of 15 NaNoWriMo Events - and a winner in 16 of them (OK, one of my manuscripts floated downstream in the 2013 Boulder Flood) I can safely state I can write under pressure! You can find out all about this event at: https://nanowrimo.org/participants/wholygirl
I am re-starting my blog: The Etheric Pulpit - a rant about whatever catches my eye, and you can find it at www.melissaellenpenn.com
Some say that I'm a whore for words - in that I write for money. No matter. But take heed - as the motto on my sweatshirt says: "Careful or you'll wind up in my novel!" This lovely sentiment was provided by one of my classmates when I attended the Institute of Culture and Creation Spirituality. NO... this isn't an indoctrination camp for non-darwinists, but rather the school of Fr. Matthew Fox of "Original Blessing" fame. (www.matthewfox.org)
The school was set at Holy Names College - an idyllic set of buildings nestled among the Oakland Hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The school was originally a girl's college, to keep young Catholic girls chaste, and prepared for a life as doormats for G*d. However, needs must, and the school had to expand to meet its ever-growing expenses. They had to let the riffraff in, namely the students of ICCS.
The nuns never missed an opportunity to fling their unhappiness at us: wanton, liberal, adults beyond their control. If there was a petty, ridiculous way to make our day miserable they took every opportunity to seize it!
Needless to say their behavior wore out any redemption they had to offer by the year's end, and after my graduation I wrote: The Fox's Tale. It was set at Holy Terrors College, where among the ivy-clad walls, and hallowed halls I murdered off each and every one of those nuns in graphic detail. Very therapeutic I must say! I sent off the manuscript to my fellow inmates, errrr ... ummm, graduate students, and one of them sent a sweatshirt with the aforementioned quote.
My essay in Everyday Joy is called "Joyful Bounding" and is about my spiritual communion with rabbits - with whom I hold a great affection. I am currently writing a novel set in 7th Century North Africa, and a nonfiction book on ethics.

That was the prompt for this edition of The Community Book Project. A group of 100+ contributing authors answered this question in 200 words or less. Their entries are gathered here. This book includes stories about living out loud (and on your own). There are tales of friends and flags and even one about online dating.
Take them in and think about this question, too: What does independence mean to you?
