What I love most about Shilpa Suraj's books is that with the power of her words, she tackles the most difficult subjects in a manner that aims to raise awareness them while being empathetic towards the protagonists in her stories. Over and above a love story, 'Midnight's Star' made me, as a reader, really think about how things that are seemingly normal to an individual like me can be so difficult for someone who's going through life with a disability.
That does NOT mean to say that the chemistry between the lead pair is not given the attention it deserves. Rather, it leaps between the words, intertwined in pages so skillfully that you wait with bated breath for that moment when they will finally realize their love for each other and do what their hearts have been telling them from the beginning.
Dev Arya is your typical, swashbuckling hero - broody, handsome, rich and elegant. Except, he is visually impaired and lonely. Shilpa masterfully creates his character to be the kind you want to go awwwwwwwwww at while sighing at his innate sexiness.
Avni is the calm to the storm that is Dev - kind to the point of being just the tad bit gullible, super sweet, a little bit kitschy but all heart. She offers Dev a shoulder to cry on and a peaceful place to sit and write (he's an author). Yet, when he offers to help her, the independent streak in her refuses the help, thinking that it comes with some hidden terms that she will not be able to comply with.
This is part 1 of the 'Shades of Night' series by Shilpa & the protagonists of the other books are introduced in this one as Avni and Dev's closest friends. I can't wait to read their stories!
Written in first person from the point of view of both Avni and Dev, this book gave me an idea of their feelings.
The author has developed the characters beautifully and I loved them and the conversations between them. She has created the back stories well and this really gave an idea to the reactions of both Avni and Dev. She has beautifully described how Dev would link a person to his voice. The way the author has described Avni’s relationship with her father, or the lack of it, seemed realistic.
I loved the friendship between Avni, Sehar and Diana and also that between Dev, Rishi and Manav. The best part was the easy camaraderie between the friends, which felt to realistic and natural.
The language is simple and the story is fast paced. I just could not keep the book down once I started it. I am really looking forward to reading the next books in the series and also about their friends.
Really loved the book and would recommend it to everyone.
The plot revolves around Dev & Avni who struggles around various emotional turmoils in their respective lives but they were hell bent on staying unwavered & not to succumb to their miseries. Dev was a rich & successful author with a dark past. He was visually impaired but rather than drenching himself into maudlin guilt, he preferred to look forward in life. Avni on the other hand had her own share of troubles & pain. Dev’ positive persona compelled enticed Avni & eventually she fell in love with him all hook, line & sinker. Though she was madly in love with him but not ready to compromise on her self respect as an individual & independence of being self dependent.
You would love to read how they reached a middle ground where both agreed to become a couple giving breathing space to the aspirations of each other.
Best part is narration of the story without much of a drama. Writer has beautifully depicted the emotional mood swings of disabled people & it will compel you to look at life from their point of view. While two characters in this story are disabled but rather than willowing in self pity they command respect from others with their actions & words.
What I found interesting is the typical boys talk between Maanav, Rishi & Dev. You would love crude & raw banters between the boys which is not much common in novels. Friendship between Diana, Seher & Avni is altruistic & u would adore all of them. Conversation between Avni & her father will make u emotional & you will get transported into their world.
Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to Shilpa for daring to choose this theme.
I was so hooked to the book from the very first scene itself. The entry of Dev Arya and Avni Desai's delimma.
As a reader I have read many books of the same gener but the concept of specially abled people touched my heart. I loved the way author has written about those charcters and how it feels to read n realise the delimma they face.
Dev is the real gentleman all girl look for in their life partner. And being specially abled he is still the top of the list.
I loved everything about this book. Each n every emotion is just at par.
I would definitely like to more books on this theme.
Also eagerly waiting for manav and Rishi's story.
